There is a slight smell of petrol pervading chez moi this evening.
Thought I'd take the opportunity of having a couple of hours spare to
balance the carbs on the GSXR. This is a fiddly little job on the
Suzuki because you've got to take the carbs off, plug the carb tune
hoses in, and then refit them.
Seat off, tank up, fuel hose off the carbs and cable tied above the
tank, airbox off, throttle position sensor disconnected, random bit of
other wiring removed, slot screwdriver through frame to undo clamps,
lift carbs, plug carb tune in, put carbs back on, tighten clamp,
re-attach random wiring, turn ignition to 'ON'.
Some of you may have spotted the fundamental error in the above -
unlike sensible kawasakies, the fuel pump is part of the tank, also
unlike kawasakies, the GSXR primes the carbs when you switch it on. If
you switch it on with the fuel hose disconnected, you get petrol pumped
out, lot's of petrol. If the hose is pointed skywards and slightly
pinched at the end, you get a huge fountain of petrol that covers you,
the bike, and most of the garage...
Hmpf.
It's not even that I didn't _know_ how it worked, I just didn't think.
Still, I should be able to close the garage door in another hour or so.

Strewth. I take it you washed the petrol off any exposed skin?

Heh. So easily done.
I did have a Thought in similar circumstances.
The Thought was: "if I were to fit a set of extension hoses, I need
never attempt to remove a fiddly rubber cap by touch with two
fingertips whilst hunched like Quasimodo over a motorbike ever again".
Unfortunately, I had this Thought *after* I'd put the incredibly
fiddly end caps back onto the TL's vacuum hose stubs and reassembled
the inlet trumpets, sensors, airbox, etc.

This is what I was about to suggest. Yamaha did this on my 1996 TDM850. I
never balanced the carbs myself but it did make fitting a Scottoiler a lot
easier as you simply cut the pipe to fit the supplied T piece.

Luckily it's bloody freezing out there, so I didn't have much skin
exposed. Hair needed a wash tho.

First time I've attempted to do the carbs on this bike, but that's what
I've just done.

Oh I've been there. GPz1100 with a dodgy fuel filler cap. No-one told me
petrol burned like that.
My best burning incident came a few years ago when I overfilled my Zippo
with proper Zippo (naptha) fuel, then drove down to see some mates in
Worthing. By the time I arrived I was in agony, with a foot-wide, angry
red burn on my outer thigh. My mate opened the door, I rushed past him,
legged it into the kitchen, dropped my trousers and vaulted onto the
kitchen work surface next to the sink, then began frantically splashing
water onto said burn.
Looking up, I noticed 4 other mates of his, who I'd never met, sitting
at the breakfast bar, watching me with what can only be described as a
look of sheer horror on their faces.
"This is Bear. He does this sort of thing; we tend not to say anything".

Well yes but when you actually want to drain a Gixxer tank into this
'ere jerry can said pump is a rather useful feature. It's the fastest
tank draining in the West.
