I need to drive from CA to VA in my 2002 trans am. I have a 2007
softail deluxe that must accompany me across country. The only way
for me to drive with both vehicles is to tow the bike in a trailer.
Can the trans am handle it? Where does the hitch go? Professional
installation? The bike weighs 700lbs and I don't have a trailer, so I
plan on renting an enclosed trailer from UHAUL. Can I take the hitch
off later because who wants a trailer hitch on their trans am? >> Stay informed about: Can trans am tow a trailer with a harley |

That shouldn't be any prolem. I've got a friend that has towed 2 dirt
bikes with a Porshe on a light trailer. >> Stay informed about: Can trans am tow a trailer with a harley |

I am no trailer specialist but I pull one all the time.
I would say it should be fine because it's so light.
(Some say the overdrive may need to be off in certain situations though I
never turn mine off).
U-Haul may rent you a hitch as well.
I have a Reese hitch on my truck (98 Dakota V-6) and pull a 16 foot trailer
loaded with a ton of materials with ease.
I also tug around a 16 foot trailer with gutter machine with no problems.
On the lighter side...
There is a song by Anthony Smith - "If That Ain't Country" mentioning a
Trans Am with a trailer hitch (not like that means anything) Just thought
I'd throw that in. >> Stay informed about: Can trans am tow a trailer with a harley |

You're fine.
You can probably buy a used, open trailer for about what you're
going to pay to rent that one. Or less. A few hundred or so on
craigslist.

I towed my CR125 all over the state of CA with my MR2. The guys at the
trailer place were quite skeptical when I told them what I wanted, but
there was actually a kit available for my MR2, so they went ahead and
did it. I could still go over the Altamont Pass at 80mph while towing,
no problem. I still have the hitch on there. I think it's cool...

YES - it could tow it at about 90MPH if you wanted! >> Stay informed about: Can trans am tow a trailer with a harley |

Go the other way, have UHaul create a hitch for the HD to tow the
TA, now that would be more fun! >> Stay informed about: Can trans am tow a trailer with a harley |

..Dude, don't do it!I'm no expert but an enclosed u-haul trailer is way
heavier than an enclosed we would buy.A trailer hitch should be no problem
but the weight of the bike coupled with the weight of that U-HAUL would be
trouble for your trans. That o/drive should definitely be off and an
additional trans cooler is a must. Please check the actual weights of the
combined units and rethink.Pick up a used trailer or the such and sell it
off at your destination.Much lighter and after selling you may recoup the
total purchase price.Just a thought.

Simplistic calculation:
Trans AM weight is about 3500 lbs. See:
http://www.modernracer.com/pontiacfirebirdtransamws6.html
Your max towing load shouldn't exceed half the car's weight,
so bike+trailer = 1700 lbs max.
Bike weight = 700 lbs
Trailer weight rated for 1/2 ton = 400 lbs (estimated)
Your towing load = 1100 lbs. Should be ok, but read this:
http://www.ntta.co.uk/faq/default.htm
CA to VA means you'll have to cross the mountains.
Try to find the route with the shallowest grades
on the eastbound descent, even if it takes you
a long way around (ie, through Idaho - the route
taken by the 1st cross country car trip).

firebird list a class I hitch option.. <approx 1500 lbs>
this should get you enough to tow a harley & a light trailer
check out jcwhitney dot com for hidden hitch or some other varieties.
this is a long way to tow a bike have you considered shipping it and saving
on the wear & tear on the car.
the trans am might not like the extra load and have trans heating issues in
the summer.

I used to tow 3 bikes in a Fiat Palio 1000cc, yeah, that's one liter,
four cylinder engine, a wee bit more than 60hp, with 3 people on board
and lots of gear bags. It was a very light three rail mc trailer
though... All special care I had to take was to leave early... On
the down slopes I could even turn AC on!!!!
I think a Trans Am could pull your harley just fine...

My '98 Formula Firebird had an incredible amount of torque. I
wouldn't worry about the power train. The biggest problem you will
have is with the rear end sagging from the weight. You might be able
to put some airshocks on the rear for the trip.
Good Luck,

I was OK with the topic until you mentioned enclosed trailer. This will be
quite a bit heavier & have a lot more drag. Go with a lightweight open
trailer. Class II hitch would be adequate. You could use one of those
cheap Harbor Freight trailers, but I'd go with the 12" wheels. Get your
hitch installed professionally. Last time I did that, Uhaul had very
competetive rates.
