Got my Rider rag today and the editor's story concerned more on the
confiscation of our liberties:

1) Denver outlaws ALL aftermarket pipes on MCs. $500 fine if "fix it"
citation isn't corrected and validated. He made a good point in
wondering why autos equipped with Midas or Meinke mufflers don't face
the same consequences.

And perhaps a death knell to the air cooled motor:

2) Minnesota is apparently going to implement 20% ethanol fuel.
Supposedly this runs hotter than the air cooled engines may be able to
withstand. There doesn't seem to be any intent to study the
ramifications of doing such a thing (dontcha just love gubament?).
The author implied that Minnesota is likely just the first domino in
the nationwide chain reaction.

Enjoy it while you still can folks.

Irrelevant to you maybe. I still got two nice ones in the garage.

Bingo.

FWIW, the Muzzy on my Warrior is at least as quiet as the stocker at
idle and low rpms. When I get on it it is considerably louder, but it
isn't something I do riding thru residential areas. I am a little
disappointed in it though. It hangs much lower than the Vance & Hines
and grinds hard on right handers. It damn near launched me last
weekend. At least it still leans to enjoyable angles in the lefties...

I am a self described left wing environmentalist wakko, but ethonal is
wicked evil. It's bad enough that something like 80% of corn goes to
feeding cows, but using it as fuel is very wrong. Many poor Mexicans are
already feeling the effects on corn prices, one of their food staples.

Say no to ethonal.

I hate loud pipes and I am too cheap (poor?) to buy aftermarket pipes. We
don't allow cars to run open headers and bikes shouldn't be allow to either.

Having said that, Denver's law is probably unworkable. They should just
enforce existing noise ordinances.

I'd ticket the businesses that allow / encourage large gatherings of loud
bikes for the noise violations. A little peer pressure goes a long way.

Maybe they do? I know people who have been busted with their car mods in
Denver. The motorsickle thing was because the Hardley morons insist on
deafening anyone within a half mile. Same thing as what the squids did to
the Dragon.

It will be interesting to see if any auto manufacturers who only warrant
their cages for 10% ethanol will even then SELL any cages in Minnesota.

What they appear to be enforcing is the "Certified by the EPA" stamp on OEM
pipes. They don't actually measure the noise, they just snare everyone, and
look for that stamp. Its in the rules they passed as well, I think.

That is weird - I got mine a couple weeks ago, at least. I saw the
same articles. Hell, one representative even wants to classify all two
wheeled vehicles as recreational only, and get them off the streets.

If I remember, the problem with loud pipes in Denver was more of an issue
with sportbikes going into downtown Denver, and rev'ing the piss out of
their engines because the noise would bounce all over the place. Of course,
it was a guy on a Hardley who told me this.... The Hardley issue you talk
about is an issue everywhere. I probably would have thought twice about the
RC51 if I had known how loud the big twin was (even with my OEM pipes). I
imagine I wake up half the neighborhood when I come tooling in on it early in
the morning, doing my best to be as quite as possible (unlike the brotha's
living on my street who do their best to rev their engines as much as possible
announcing their arrival or departure...).

Those idiots aren't any better than the Hardley guys. But to get a decent
pipe singing, you gotta rev it up. Not much room in downtown Denver for
that, whereas a Hardley being "revved" is something they manage to do at
stoplights.

Either way, when people started moaning about it on local boards, I chimed
in and said "yeah! That'll fix them Hardley guys!" and got blasted because
all the sportbike guys who swap out pipes were about to get hosed as well
and I thought it was funny. Stock pipes all around on most of my bikes since
the beginning of time of course.

Tell me about it. Nice, warm, summer night and I've got to wind up my
windows when they go by at 30mph to keep my ear drums intact.

Of course you think it's cute, because like a typical conservative you
can never see into the game any deeper than the current move.

Have you any idea why mfgs can sell sportbikes so cheap? Do you find
it odd that all the old tech cruisers are so expensive? If this kind
of regulation drives enthusiasts out of the market, will the lower
demand lead to more selection for us? Lower prices?

Got a cheap sportbike...thank a squid.

BS. When a group of idiots pisses in the pool, and people complain, and the
idiots continue to piss in the pool, the idiots ( and everyone related to
them ) shouldn't be surprised when the people that own the pool ban idiots
( and everyone related to them ) from using it.

The Dragon is another perfect example and you know it.

Because they can?

No. Niche marketing does weird things with prices....same as with handbags.
I can get one for $20 at WalMart which doesn't look much different from a
Gucci I get at the Caesar Forums in Vegas.

Squids don't buy my type of sportbike.

I was reading an Aussie bike mag with a story about cops pulling bikes
over for 'noise checks' . They had a decibel meter to make
sure!....BUT.....even if your bike passed the decibel test, if you
didn't have the correct stamp on the mufflers, you got a ticket.
Wankers.....

Only a matter of time before these regulations cross the ditch.

I've never understood the *need* to drop the OEP pipes for streetbikes.
I heard a salesman at the dealership telling one potential customer "the
first thing I gotta do when I get a new bike is put on some custome pipes."
Uh huh.

Da noiz! Da noiz!

Spend the money on suspension and brakes I always say.

The local new racer instructor is always making fun of people who do just
that, does it to EVERYONE even without looking at their bikes, which is how
sure he is everyone does it. He was lecturing me one day on squidlings, and
how slow they are, and how everyone needs better suspension and brakes, and
how him on his EX500 can beat their Hayabusa's down the front dragstrip at
Pueblo, and how EVERYONE puts a pipe on their bike "just like I
did"....then he looks at my bike....see's the stock pipe....looks back at
me....I'm grinning ear to ear...so I say..."Well..the Penske triple clicker
nearly COST as much as a pipe, does that count?"
