I've used the Chatterbox intercom and the FRS.

The Intercom is small and light weight but forget talking above 90 km/ph (55
mph). The batteries are good for one long (12 hrs.) or two short rides and
there is limited volume control (hi/lo). It used two hearing aid batteries
which can get expensive (I bought them by the case).
The FRS is a lot more money, and weight, but you get volume control and a
rechargeable battery. You can reasonably talk up to about 110 k/hr (full
face helmet) and the battery will last you one long ride (12 hrs.)
If you connect a portable stereo (cassette or CD) the batteries in either
one will last half as long.
We now both have our own bikes and use the FJR FRS. We've traveled all
over north America and they are a life saver when you get split up by
traffic.
There are other brands and models out there, but I have no experiences with
them nor reports from friends using them.

Ride safe
Serge

Consider the Nady MRC-11. It's an intercom that has the bike-to-bike FRS
radio built in. It also runs on standard batteries and has a standard
volume control. Much better quality for a lot less money.

Good luck with the Nady! We had one and it was fine as long as you were not
on the motorcycle. We had to shout to hear one another and then it was
still hard to understand what was said. We went to the Chatterbox HJC-50
and it was much better, not great but at least we could hear each other
without having the volume control turned up full blast and yell. BTW, it
does NOT use hearing aid batteries but a rechargeable battery pack. It was
only for ride-to-passenger. Since I now ride my own bike, we purchased the
GMRS rider-to-rider Chatterbox which can also be used as an intercom.

That doesn't sound like my MRC-11. It's volume is loud. So much so that
if the intercomm level is turned down to where its comfortable, the level
of the music from my CD/radio is too low. It's also a rider-to-passenger
intercom AND an FRS (or optional PME for Europe) rider-to-rider unit.

It doesn't have a rechargeable battery pack. It uses 3 standard AA
batteries which lasts for days. Weeks, if you don't do a lot of
rider-to-rider transmitting. If you get one, don't bother buying the
optional battery converter unit that allows it to run off the bikes
electrical system. I haven't used mine. The batteries ran out once in
the last month or so, and I stopped at the first gas station and got a new
set.

My only complaint is that the VOX sucks. The FRS works manually, but
only when you have a free hand to push the transmit button.
