if you were thinking of starting a bike run at Thurrock (it's roughly
in the middle of where the people concerned are based), which would
good roads to actually ride?

Not really much choice round there, but I'd head to Burnham
and do the bends - between South Woodham Ferrers and Burnham
itself, marked as Lower Burnham Road in Google Maps.

Just beware that it is popular and Plod sometimes setup
roadblocks (no kidding!) there to check every bike
going through.

Depends how far you want to go. Most of Thurrock is rather grim. However,
there is some quite pleasant scenery in S Essex if you head out towards
Ingatestone, Stock, Hanningfield Reservoir etc. The road to Burnham has
already been recommended and Burnham itself is a pleasant little town. If
you fancy going a bit further then get on the far side of the A12 and there
are any number of pretty little villages good pubs etc around the Chipping
Ongar area and beyond. Maldon is also pleasant down by the promenade. Apart
from the road to Burnham, none of the roads themselves are particularly
interesting. Alternatively, go over the bridge into Kent...

Essex is a bit short of decent roads that you can tie together neatly to
make a nice ride. There are loads of little bits and pieces of
interesting tarmac here and there but the gaps between them make a "fun
ride" not as much fun as it should be.

Most!! All of it perlease.

Apart from that being north of here and thus in Central Essex you are
mostly right. Even better biking is to be had on the other side of the
A12 though.

West and NW of Chelmsford you will find some nice roads but the good
bits don't last as long as roads in other counties.

The Burnham Bends are well worth the doing but have to be taken early,
before the christians get on the roads.
