There is a section in Paxman's "Fish, Fishing and the Meaning of Life",
devoted to what makes a good fishing hotel. Sounds as if your
acquaintance has probably found an excellent one.

Come to Jersey (flights much cheapness) and stay here:

http://www.greenhillshotel.com/

Note the three-night offer with car-hire included.

Cheap flight from Luton (easyJet) v. reasonable from Gatwick and
Heathrow too. More than 150 miles but less than an hour's flight.

Oh, and nowhere's more than 2.5 miles from the sea!

Only one way to find out! Is your gf up for a spit-roast or some dp?

We're not rich enough to live here either - my SWMBO is an 'essential
worker' and housing comes with the job.

Too many dodgy, pissed up contractors as well. Dungeness B has got a
major outage planned this year and I'm trying to fix it so I'm there
rather than up in the barren NW where I normally spend my summers.

Thought you wanted a treat? Great hotel, nice rooms with all the
trimmings, good food - IMO not bad value at all all in.

Gbp330 for dinner, B & B for two people? Doesn't sound at all bad to
me.

Oh, you just said that. Is there an echo in here?

Pikey scum. If it were half decent, I'd have no probs with that at
all.

That's far too pricey for me. A long weekend would work out nearly a
grand, FFS!
