The teachers at Robert Gordon's always did that and they carried canes. Of
course this was the 60's and 70's.

I had a 650 Yam when I was 18 and stuck on apprentices wages but I was
living at home and working whatever overtime was offered to me.
I must admit to the occasional foray with a petrol can to a local
company who had a 2* pump in their yard and a lock that could be
picked when I was almost out of petrol and a couple of days short of
payday. Needs must etc.. >> Stay informed about: How fast does Darwin work? |

The headmaster, year tutors and anyone with a doctorate wore gowns and
mortar boards at my school but, as stated previously, this was frowned
upon when it went comprehensive in about 1973. One or two carried on
as if nothing had changed but the new headmaster wanted it stopped
because it was a "grammer school thing". >> Stay informed about: How fast does Darwin work? |

*Your* circumstances were unusual?
Really, no idea. Where you lived; the type of workplace you were at;
sheer coincidence.
A I was a technician making my own way, I'm sure I wasn't by any means
the only one, especially if you take into account equivalents in other
industries.

Well, sure. But I was living on a grant, FFS.

There was obviously a bell curve of earnings potential, but as a
student I was certainly a long way from the top of it. My circle of
friends and acquaintances in biking were mostly people who worked in
light engineering and similar - once they'd done their apprenticeship,
they got their old man to sign the HP and off they went on a big bike.
