A similar thought struck me when he suggested swapping supermarket
loyalty cards with a friend to confuse the system. Why not just not have
a loyalty card?

Because they rob you blind if you don't have one? Dunno about where
you are, but in the western USA nearly every item at Albertson's et al,
is _way_ overpriced unless you use one of the cards. Strangely,
they'll happily give you a "loyalty card" (AKA tracking device) at the
register without requiring you to fill out the form, and you can bin
it on your way out.

Somerfields tried that on me a while back. Some chicken breasts came up
on the till at *way* over the advertised price.
I queried it, and they pointed to the tiny print saying I had to have
one of their loyalty cards to get that price.
"No thanks".
"Ah well, then you'll have to pay the higher price sir!" <smug smile>
"No I won't. Goodbye."
And off I wandered, leaving a full trolley and a load of packed carrier
bags behind.
Haven't been back.

That would have given me considerable satisfaction but I would still be
without the food and have lost the time it took to push my trolley
around their poxy establishment.
I wouldn't put up with such shenanigans on a regular basis either, but
when you're traveling, and the only supermarkets within 50 miles are
encumbered by these abominable loyalty card schemes, you either play
the game or pay through the nose. I like the idea of making them think
you are participating, but in fact you're getting a new card each time
which tells them nothing about you and costs them the price of printing
more of the unholy things.

I've vague memories of doing something similar in a pub. We'd ordered some
beer, and then the barman started telling me (in a fairly condescending
fashion) how I'd have to take my infant offspring out into the street, down
the side and in through the back of the toilets to get to the children's
room. Meanwhile, Sarah was discovering that half the stuff on the menu was
off. So we went out into the street, got in the car and drove off, leaving
the beer sat on the counter, untouched and unpaid-for. >> Stay informed about: That's cool |

I had a similar experience when proffering a Scottish tenner in exchange
for a couple of pints. "Can't take that" says the barman after putting
the pints on the bar. "Fair enough" says I, over my shoulder. >> Stay informed about: That's cool |

Yersh. But I wonder if any of that is realisable by the owners any
time soon? Said the bloke who was worth 1/2 million on paper at the
height of the dotcom boom, in shares he wasn't allowed to sell.

I value my time (as in time spent walking around there) much higher
than that and I certainly don't let trivial little things like a
loyalty card cost me my time. Your loss, not theirs. >> Stay informed about: That's cool |

It's not legal tender in England, so he's not obliged to take it.

Not really, it still makes me smile when I think of it now. Well worth a
small time investment.
