So there were these two trees that grew up side by side in the forest. One
was a Beech and one was a Birch, but they became fast friends over the
years. (Well, okay; they became slow friends.)
One day they noticed a new sapling was growing across the clearing from them
and began to discuss whether it was related to either of them. And as they
spoke of it, they each became convinced that the sapling was their own
offspring, but it was just too far away to be certain.
So one day a woodpecker lit in the Beech tree, and the tree said, "Friend
woodpecker, would you fly over there and find out whether yon sapling is a
son of a beech or a son of a birch? The question is driving me nuts."
"Sure!" said the woodpecker, and flew across the clearing and began pecking
at the sapling. And kept on pecking at the sapling. And *continued* pecking
at the sapling for a couple of hours...finally flying back to perch in the
Beech tree, weaving slightly.
"Well", said the Beech (breathlessly), What's the verdict? Is that sapling a
son of a beech or a son of a birch?
"It's neither one", said the woodpecker, "but it's sure the best piece of
ash I've had this pecker into for a long time..."
