I've got two weekend+ rides coming up, both of which will be on my
Harley Street Glide, but reading Troy's comments about credit card
touring vs fully bagged touring got me to thinking about what I carry
with me on more than overnight trips on the Ducati Monster (no bags,
tiny tank bag, soft tail trunk) and the Harley, with standard Harley
hard bags *and* a chopped Tour Pak.
Harley:
Right Saddlebag: Harley tool roll, tubeless tire repair kit,
Leatherman tool, Gortex rain pants, Goretex rain jacket, spare
faceshield, soft fabric (cordura nylon) snap-on fairling lowers (leg
protectors), a pair of tennis shoes, spare pair of riding gloves.
Left Saddlebag: Soft liner with a change of under clothing,
toiletries kit with spare Rx glasses, first-aid kit, plastic-covered
wire loops and padlock (for helmet/clothing security when stopped and
out of sight of the bike), laptop computer. If it's a three day or
longer trip, I usually have a spare pair of jeans and a sweatshirt
stuffed in here, too.
Tour Pak: Soft liner with digital camera in case, radar detector (for
use outside Virginia), paper maps, small bottle of windex, small can
of Honda Pro Spray Cleaner & Polish, couple of washclothes, cd wallet,
baseball cap, lip balm, ear plugs . I usually leave enough room in
here for my Aerostich Roadcrafter, if I can.
When I stop for the night, I lock the right saddlebag, leaving
everything in it, and take the soft liners of the left saddlebag and
the tour pak into my hotel room. Occasionally I'll just take the
camera out of the Tour Pak and leave everything else just locked up in
it.
Ducati:
Tank bag: Digital camera, spare face shield, goretex rain jacket, lip
balm, ear plugs, Leatherman tool
Soft tail bag: pair of tennis shoes, spare pair of gloves, toiletries
kit, change of underclothes, plastic-covered wire loops and padlock
(for helmet/clothing security when stopped and out of sight of the
bike), small can of chain lubricant.
Wearing: Shoei RF1000 full face helmet, comfortable t-shirt, jeans,
motorcycle boots, gloves, Aerostich Roadcrafter, plus in winter,
Gerbing heated jacket and/or pants.

I am a bit surprised no one mentioned carrying a gun. You never know
when you're going to need one. >> Stay informed about: What to carry? Nekkid versus bagged weekend.... |

Except for your predilection toward chickenshit, blow the bank,
dictators, we have a lot in common. While I generally wear a well
ventilated Gortex suit for the enitire trip and I don't tend to
require lipstick, I do like to have regular clothes, tennis shoes,
swim trunks, flip flops, patch kit, tool kit, shaving kit, woman, and
a camera when I arrive. And sans the pillion, I'm gonna need room for
a pocket pussy, laptop, and wireless modem.

One change of street clothes, standard riding gear, rainsuit, camera, credit
card. Just enough tools to handle obvious issues like tightening a chain,
snugging up some popular sized bolt, some duck tape and a towel.
Might work for a week long trip with the addition of laundry facilities at
hotels. >> Stay informed about: What to carry? Nekkid versus bagged weekend.... |

I had 2 cars that had a similiar problem, a 1970 Chevelle would die after
big puddles and a Datsun 1200 that would not start in damp weather.
WD-40 is your friend. I believe the WD stands for "Water Displacement". >> Stay informed about: What to carry? Nekkid versus bagged weekend.... |

Well, I've only been on one, which was a two nighter with hotels.
Concours -
Valuables like cameras, meds, glasses, went in a backpack that I kept in
the Givi topcase (along with the water bottle), making it easy to get to
the cameras and easy to pull the whole thing out and carry with me. Hotel
things like clothes and toiletries went into a soft bag for easy retrieval
out of a sidecase at the end of the day. All else was just stored in
sidecases, soft bagged and not soft bagged as appropriate, except the
kickstand pad which is always in the left glove box.
Necessities - Bike
Factory tool kit
Pliers
Small adjustable metric (Crescent)
Tire Patch Kit
CO2 Tire inflator w/5 charges
Electrical Tape (couldn't find the Duc)
Kickstand pad (always have that)
Short 2x4, short (bike stand aid)
Knife
Small flashlight
Roll of paper towels
Yellow work gloves
Tiedowns and rope (for the ferry ride)
Necessities - Me
Credit Card
Cash
Cellphone
Meds (Prevacid and Lipitor)
Spare Glasses
First Aid Kit
Kleenex, small pack
Chapstick
Aspirin
Toothpaste/brush
Comb
Shampoo
Rainsuit
Underwear
Socks
Nike sport pants for evening (shared a room w/Sis)
Sandals
Shirt
Bottle of water
Unnecessary
Digital camera
video camera
small binoculars
(No maps as it's impossible to get lost on a highway up here)
(Didn't take my 357 mag either. Wouldn't need it for anything other than
target practice so it's more of a liability than an asset)

You forget the Gixxer 750?
And considering I actually CRASHED my current sportbike on a racetrack....it
seems disingenuous of you to suggest it can't even BE a sportbike.
Considering I was passing 2 out of every 3 RC51's out that night, I must
have one HECK of a non sportbike!! >> Stay informed about: What to carry? Nekkid versus bagged weekend.... |

Here's another idea: have someone follow in a cage
loaded with supplies.
(optional) The cage pulls a trailer in case the bike
breaks down or you get tired of riding.
The cage is your mobile base station. It doesn't need
to be in sight if you have cell phones or CB's.

A chase vehicle for a weekend ride? I must have a vision problem cuz I
just don't see myself doing that.
