Funny then that the site says "Notes about the road legal buggies: You
will need a full car licence". Not sure quite how that squares with
them being taxed as motorcycles.

Stuck in the most gawd awful traffic on the A13 last night, decided to nip
over the woolwich ferry to greenwich. When we drove onto the ferry, parked
beside us was one of these...
http://www.f2motorcycles.ltd.uk/roadlegalbuggies.html
Got out and had a chat to the guy, and as it turns out, the thing came under
the definition of a road legal quad bike, and hence was taxed as a
motorcycle, and had no requirement for congestion charge etc. It had a
number plate at the rear, and a very revvy little 125cc engine, full lights
and a digital speedo mounted on the speedo. It got me thinking, would this
thing be able to use a bike bay, as I for one would be a bit miffed at
finding one of these taking up three bikes worth of space when I park up.
On the other hand, it'd be a different and fun commute for not much more
than a twist'n'go.
Anyone on here know more than I do on these things...

To answer your question I'd say it's a car. 4 wheels, steering wheel,
bucket seat - what else could it be? At least with a quad you've got
handlebars and you sit astride it like a bike.

Now that would be an interesting commute... drop into the thames at Barrier
Park, pootle up the river and drive out again at Westminster, leave half a
doesen tyre tracks over a politition or twelve, then on to work, leaving it

Foolproof.
My daydream sessions often include thinking of novel ways to commute in and
out of work [1], the last-one I ruled out was a motor-paraglider since I
figured aviation security over London might be a bit dicey since 9-11, and
I don't fancy getting shot at on my way to work.

I think wether or not its got a reverse gear driven by the engine's the
defining criterion ......
That's they key question for sorting out licencing on 3wheelers - IMBW
WIngs and such like get round the reverse bit by powering the gear off the
battery not the engine. (I think).
> At >least with a quad you've got handlebars and you sit >astride it like

Which to me is closer to what matters. You can at least jump off a quad,
same as a bike.
A bike's safe in town to the extent its small agile and quick - so you can
get out of the way. A powerful quad is maybe mostly edging this way too.
A cage is fairly safe cos its armoured enough to protect you.
That contraption doesn't seem to be any of these things and I'd not put
money on the SMIDSY brigade knowing one of the things was about even after
they hit it never mind before.

The last bike bay I saw had "Solo Motorcycles" painted on the road next
to it. The use of the word solo is rather pointed and suggests there
may have been wrangles elsewhere over a vehicle which is "technically"
a motorcycle parking in a bike bay.

It mainly applies to sidecar combos, which may park in an ordinary
motorcycles bay, but not one with "solo" marked on it.

It pointedly refers to sidecars. Or even Wings with trailers.
Which could/would get towed from the solo bike bays in Shrewsbury.
