My 2000 ZX-9R has gone through it's second coolant temperature sensor in 3
months. Does anyone have any history of this part failing frequently or if
there is a particular procedure besides that in the manual for proper
replacement? I would appreciate any assistance.

The obvious question is, did you overtighten it?

Torque charts have been known to contain an occasional typo.

I'm not familiar with the bike, does the sensor feed into the ignition
controller, or does it just drive the temperature gauge?

Finally, make sure there are no wiring faults and that there is not a
defective component in the circuit that is causing the CTS to fail.

Thank you for your reply. Looking at the schematic, the sensor appears to
just feed the temperature gauge. I used about 10 ft lbs to install the
sensor.

Thanks.

Check the voltage going to the sensor. If it's proper (consult the service
spec, and shouldn't be more than 13.6V, ever) then you are probably very
unlucky in that you are getting bad sensors that are in a particular batch.
Should be able to get the dealer to replace it especially if you have proper
voltage. Goodluck.

Oh, they don't fail very often at all. Believe it or not.
