On a ride today, I met some guys at a gas station. Three of 'em were riding
VSTAR 650s. All had all the Yamaha signs off as well as the VSTAR decal on
the tanks. Two were just black, like mine, and one was yellow with lime
green flames.
Even tho I ride a VSTAR, I had to look a couple of times to be sure what
they were. Hmmm. Neat idea.
They also had "slip ons", louder mufflers. Good sound. They said that with
the slip ons they didn't have to rejet, as they'd've had to do if they just
removed the baffles from the stock mufflers.
Think I know what I'm gonna do to my bike. grin
cheers

If you just remove the 1st baffle, you don't need to rejet anything...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Saw some VSTARs |

Although you dont HAVE to rejet, it doesn't hurt. The stock jetting is no
more than rich enough to get by, and even with the stock pipes rejetting
gives a little cleaner snap off the bottom and somewhat lessens the onset of
vibration at higher revs. Another crucial, but very easy to do thing is to
adjust the air bleed screws. These are the screws that are covered up by
pressed in metal covers that have to be pulled out. They are the reaon a
dynojet, cobra or factory jet kit has a small drill and a sheet metal screw
in it. When you get these plugs out (located on the engine side of the
carb, on top, turn the screws carefully in till seated, then back em out 3
whole turns. (see attached pic from dynojet kit) If anyone would like to
know the jet/needle sizes, email me and i would be happy to send you the
info. Just because i paid 80 bucks for the kit doesnt mean everyone has to.

Ps, your single wall pipes are gonna turn blue no matter what. As surely as
iron turns rust red when it unites with oxygen, so too will chromium turn
blue when it unites with oxygen. The heat just serves as a catalytic agent
for the reaction, and lean jetting tends to run hotter.

Hmmmm. I'm presently in Phoenix, about 900 feet above sea level. I'm
leaving Saturday for Albuquerque, 5600 feet above sea level and, after a
month there, heading for Gunnison, Co. about 7700 feet above sea level. I
don't think it's gonna be very lean up there. I'd figured I was gonna have
to rejet for the higher altitude anyway.
Comments?

Where I live (Timmins, Ontario, Canada) is also roughly 900 feet above sea
level. With cobra drag slipons, it is a hair lean but liveable, with the
baffles IN. With them out it is just too lean for my liking, especially
when the pipes get good and hot (increases the scavenging effect) Plus with
the baffles out, in my opinion, its just too loud. I get tired of listening
to the damn things after about 20 highway miles. At the altitudes you will
be experiencing, no i would say that leanness with stock jetting won't be a
problem<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Saw some VSTARs |

Sorry 'bout the late reply. But, I just removed one of my mufflers and
found it was welded together. I can't get that end cap off, which is how I
assume one would get the baffle out.. How'd you do it, bust the weld???
Did you weld it back or just drill and put in a screw?
cheers

Interesting idea. I lived up at 8250 feet for many years. I didn't
have a motorcycle at the time, but me and just about everyone else had
to advance the timing in their car or truck. If your timing was
normally set at 8 to 10 degrees before TDC, you'd advance it to 10 to
12 degrees before. This seemed to do the trick, otherwise you had no
power at all. Also, don't forget to let air out of your tires if you
are gonna be up there very long. With much less air pressure at high
elevation, you need to do that or you get a rock hard ride, especially
on gravel roads.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Saw some VSTARs |
