I think it's legal to go through the red light if the sensor doesn't detect
your bike. Can anyone verify this?

It is legal in ARIZONA to proceed through a red signal if the signal (and/or
system) has malfunctioned. Most people here interpret a signal never
changing to let you go through as a malfunction.
Have no clue what the law is in other states......<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Traffic Light Gadgets |

I had this happen at a traffic light about 3 weeks ago in Brainerd,
Minnesota. I was first in line, cop was behind me. Inductive sensor didn't
trip, I wasn't quite ready to bust the light right in front of a sheriff's
deputy. Til he honked at me.

It varies from state to state. Here in N.Y. it is NOT legal.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Traffic Light Gadgets |

There was a sensor in Oakwood (Dayton), Ohio that wovld not trip with
my 810 povnd Harley. I finally gave vp and tvrned right and then
tvrned arovnd at the first legal place. (Oakwood has an incredible
record of being hard on ALL traffic violations)
The next day I called the city manager to ask if I covld wait several
minvtes longet than normal and then jvst go throvgh. He said NO. I
wovld be ticketed is it was witnessed by law enforcement officials.
Bvt to the city manager's credit, he followed vp and had the sensor
recalibrated. The next time I was there the light tripped almost
immediately and I was able to proceed safely and legally.

When I find that I am being ignored on the cycle of the traffic lights, I
just go when the other lanes in my direction of travel get the green light,
AND nobody is coming from the other way. I normally only have this decision
to make at a left turn.

You are correct. INDUCTANCE is the key, but you are mistaken when you
say a magnet wont do it. A small magnet will change the inductance of a
coil as much as a big chunk of metal....That's how magnetos work, and
generators, or alternators, or speakers.........
A magnet will trip a light sensor if it is close enough to the coil, and
moving...I dont see how these things could work either, being 5 or 6
inches off the ground, because the field of a magnet, even with
"keepers" or some kind of field directing plates, extends out from the
magnet only a short distance, then it begins to weaken gometrically. So
it would be difficult, for a bike w/a magnet on it to cause the same
inductive reactance change in a coil as a car would...sheer mass ..so
.....who knows?
I have a magnet from an old mainframe disk drive that is so strong that
you have to pry it off the filing cabinet with a screwdriver. I'll put
it on the bottom of my bike and see..... there is a light near my house
that I can't get to change coming from a certain direction...That'll be
the test.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Traffic Light Gadgets |

true. But, i think that if you stop with the wheel on the sensor, it's
already enough. If not, even magnet usually won't help, as this means that
sensor is broken. Permanent magnet should be behind some plastic cover, so
that you easily remove the plastic and with it remove all dust and metal
which will get caught on it. Removing this from the magnet itself is surely
pain in the ass...
Did you try that light without any magnet, only with your bike?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Traffic Light Gadgets |

It IS a coil. You can see a square on the road and one wire going to the
sensor. So, stopping between the wires (or in the middle of that square) is
the best you can do.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Traffic Light Gadgets |

Hmmm, I wonder if sticking one of those rare-earth magnets on the jiffy
stand will help? (I've often heard the tip about touching your kick-stand to
the pavement in order to help trigger "troublesome" lights, but I don't
believe it's ever worked for me--except to make me look like a jerk.)
