Hi all,
Delurking for all to see. Anyone know the best way to adjust the clutch
on the 650? Not how to adjust it, but how best to set it up. About the
last 1/2 to 3/4 inch of lever motion gets me rolling. Also, when I put
it into first gear I get a pretty loud clunk, but it's only stalled the
motor once. Does anyone still have the 650 service manual on PDF? If so
would you e-mail it to me? Remove underwear to e-mail me.
Thanks,
Rich

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding your question, but it sounds like
you have no play in your lever. You're supposed to have about an inch
of play at the end of travel, that is, after the clutch is fully
disengaged. You adjust this by pushing back the rubber cover where
the cable emerges from the lever mount and turning the cable out for
less play and in for more play. If you can't get enough play there,
you adjust the clutch cable down near the trans. It's all pretty
simple. I found that I had to increase the play just a tad because my
hand is smaller than would be right for the suggested play. I also
found that the amount of play increases and decreases with the engine
temp, so I had to adjust it several times to get it just right. The
shifting on my new 650 Classic is still a bit rough. If this doesn't
improve over time, I'll probably replace the stock clutch with a
Barnett racing clutch. I did this on a Honda I owned a long time ago
and the improvement was like a whole new motorcycle.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: V-Star 650 clutch adjustment |

You're right. I don't seem to have any play at the end of the levers
travel. I'll do some adjusting on it in the morning.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: V-Star 650 clutch adjustment |

Mine was the same way. My husband and I readjusted it, and now it's great.
It grabs in just the right place. As an added bonus, I don't stall the bike
out much anymore.

My wife's 650 and every other 650 VStar I've seen is the same way. I've
tried adjusting it and even had the dealer look at it. No change. The
clutch engages very near the end of the handle travel.
I'd be interested to know if you have any success.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: V-Star 650 clutch adjustment |

My husband adjusted my lever, and it works much better now. I don't know
why that wouldn't work for you though.

Adjusting the free play helped quite a bit. The friction zone is still
pretty small, but not at the end of the lever travel anymore. It shifts
better now so the ride is more enjoyable.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: V-Star 650 clutch adjustment |

I have adjusted her lever but it still engages well past the half way mark of
the lever. She doesn't seem to mind it but it's quite far compared to my
1100.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: V-Star 650 clutch adjustment |
