Anybody got any favorite north/south routes ?

There's 49/89, and I recall taking 113 through Davis
Is there any halfway interesting north/south route west of 49 ?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I'm also thinking about 101, cutting over to Callistoga via Petrified
Forest, then 29 to 20 across to Oroville. 29 is a nice road. Never
tried 20 from Clearlake to Oroville.

Thanks

113 to is about as calm as it gets these days The other way to do it
is 49/89 as you mentioned. Maybe you could take 162 East from the
Central Valley all the way to Lake Oroville, then UP the Bucks Lake
Road to Quincy. That way it starts off kind of lumpy and bumpy and
gets better as you go up the hill.

Don't forget to check out Quincy- Laporte Road! It was paved a few
years back. Yummy.
A good loop is to include both roads in one ride, just for the fun of
it that is.

A few years back, I spent almost an entire day riding back and forth
between Quincy and Oroville on La Porte road, 162/Oroville Quincy Hwy,
and Hwy 70 through the Feather River Canyon. La Porte is not to be
missed--the descent into Quincy is just incredible when you are going
the Oroville->Quincy direction. If you prefer uphills to downhills,
you might consider going the other direction on that one Wink

Sorry I can't help you on how to get there, but you'll certainly have
fun once you're there Smile

I did 29 to 20 when I did my trip through Oroville. I enjoyed 29, but
it had a fair bit of traffic. My notes say that after Middletown I
wasn't impressed.

If you like dirt, Western Mines Road, 29 just south of Middleton.
101 to Mark West Springs, Frantz Valley and Ida Clayton to
Western Mines.

For just a nice curvy piece of backroad, 101 into Callistoga
St. Helena into Petrified Forest into 29 around Callistoga.

I agree that further south, it's unimpressive on 101 or 29.

Thanx

Between Oroville and Quincy there is a small hamburger stand that sits on
the north side of the road about halfway through the canyon.

Anyone know the name of it? Seems to be a biker place on the weekends.

Nice ride too.

Found it. Scooter's Cafe. Other one is the Rock House about one mile
further east.

Never stopped at Scooter's Cafe ... no shade! Used to
grab a cold one and edible crud in Belden Town with
that patio in back overlooking the Feather River until
their hours and management style became erratic.

Have had lunch at Stoney's Burgers in Quincy a few
times.

Took the route I described. 101 -> Petrified Forest
-> Calistoga-> 29->53->20->45->162->Bucks Lake.
Nice ride. Best done in moderate weather. Clear Lake
was the hottest part of the ride, with the central valley
a little bit cooler. Bucks Lake road out of Oroville still
has a detour in the middle but is a nice ride anyway.

Up at Bucks lake, spent Saturday riding with two
friends. Lake Almanor, lunch at Mill Creek with
an assortment of other back roads, most of them
covered rather rapidly. A couple hundred miles
riding windy roads at 80 +.

Returning, I had one early morning near encounter with
a buck that charged across the road from my left.
Probably the closest I've ever come to a deer strike.
Braked hard, steered behind him and missed by a
foot or two. Good size rack of antlers that I'm really
glad I didn't tangle with.

I took 70 back fromQuincy and enjoyed the canyon
enormously. Stopping at Scooters I found them to be
nice folks. Had a nice breakfast, and found a few other
riders to talk to. I liked the place. Stopped overnight at
Chico to visit my son, then headed home the next morning.

On the way home, I took 45 to 113 to Davis. Nice old
farm roads, winding along the edge of the river, then
cutting inland, making random 90 degree turns at
the edges of people's property lines. I had to brake
a couple of times for fat old dogs wandering in the road
and once for a low flying egret.

Cool overcast weather on the way back instead of the
usual central valley furnace. Oddly, when I got out of
the central valley and back to the bay the lifted and it
was a nice sunny afternoon. All in all, a great weekend.
