Qualifying positions, race positions, what I see on the track in terms
of speed. Today de Puniet was 4th, Hopkins 6th, Vermeulen 9th, and
there's nothing all that unusual about that. Last year those guys were
9th, 13th, 14th. Even on top speed, Ducati's strong suit this year, they
haven't necessarily done relatively better - at Mugello, Capirossi was
11kph up on de Puniet last year on his five fastest race readings, and
this year Stoner was up only 4 (the difference to Hopkins was about the
same). Last year, when fully healthy, Loris could run at or close to the
front much of the time, tho not as dominantly as Stoner this year, of
course. But it seems like Suzuki has made a bigger jump, and Kawasaki,
once one factors in their reduction in riding talent, seems to have made
at least as much of a jump. The is likely more than just money that has
Hopper going that direction next year. >> Stay informed about: Sachsenring day 1 spoiler |

You say "reduction in riding talent", but look where those previous
riders are finishing now on other makes.
http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=29608
1. Casey STONER (Ducati), Bridgestone, 1:22.384
2. Dani PEDROSA (Honda), Michelin, 1:22.388
5. John HOPKINS (Suzuki), Bridgestone, 1:22.561
10. Shinya NAKANO (Honda), Michelin, 1:22.969
16. Alex HOFMANN (Ducati), Bridgestone, 1:23.199
Can't really blame the bikes for 10th and 16th. That's in the same
ballpark they were running on the Kawi. Can't wait to see how Hopkins
does on it. There have also been hints of hiring a "proven MotoGP
race winner" to team up with him. That could be good or bad. There
are some previous winners out there that would be hard pressed to win
again on any bike. They could make the Kawi look worse than it is.

Damn good run by Nicky to get to 3rd from 14th, though he gained some
of those positions by the thinning of the herd in front of him.
Colin did a good job of hanging with him for 4th after starting 13th.
Do you think tires were Stoner's problem or something else? No drag
race strips on that track for the Duc to win, maybe? >> Stay informed about: Sachsenring day 1 spoiler |

Yes, but just like he said, he needs to put a whole weekend together. For
him to recover as many positions, the bad can't be as bad as a 14th for
qualifying. The Honda is starting to work very well after Honda predictably
has put its development might behind it. I should not be surprised if it's
the best bike by a significant margin within a few more races. Today it
certainly looked like the best bike-tire combo out there.
> Do you think tires were Stoner's problem or something else? No drag

He rode a smart race, obviously the Duc-Stone combo wasn't the best bike
this time around, and Stoner is smart to look at the points. With Rossi
crashing out, it would have been silly to go for an improbable victory
against guys that have a lot to prove and little to lose.
Pedrosa ran a solid race, but it didn't look like he had to ride the wheels
off his bike. Rossi on the other hand had a classic case of pushing slightly
too hard, the bike gave in ever so softly when barely pushed over the edge,
it even looked like something a Rossi in top form might have saved in the
past. It simply seemed to ask for a tad more knee support and running a bit
wider. Hard to say, I wasn't on that bike, and heck, I've never saved jack
with my knee - but I've seen racers do it A huge mistake by Rossi, but
such are the fortunes of racing. Now Honda seems to have overtaken Yamaha
quite solidly, and Rossi's confidence seems somewhat dented. We shall see
where things go from here. Stoner seems to truly have his number now.
Needless to say, it's telling for this forum that when Hayden is riding in
the back, it's clearly a bike issue, yet when Rossi falls off trying to stay
up front, it's got to be because he's overrated or has forgotten how to
ride... entertaining to see the inconsistency in people's arguments
depending on who the rider is, or more appropriately whether he's American
or not...
Laguna looks like it may be the Hayden show again - the bike's working
again, Hayden's confident... and has shown stunning superiority on his "home
track" (although Kentucky it ain't) in the past 2 years.

Val seems to be missing those "Saturday Night Specials"
that Michelin did for him last year more than the other guys.
But today's mistake was just a matter of being impatient.
Michelin had the race tire today and if Val had just waited he would have
been on the podium

Yeah it was, he picked up somethin' like 5 spots by T1..

Michelin certainly had good tire, especially later on and had Rossi not
wadded it he prolly would've been on the box, though It would've been a
stretch to catch the gnome..
No drag
> race strips on that track for the Duc to win, maybe?
He got considerably less racy after Rossi went down, but that might've been
more about tires than stategy. In any event, Nicky looks to have some Mo and
will prolly be the man again at 'Guna, we'll see.. >> Stay informed about: Sachsenring day 1 spoiler |

1.Ducati Stoner 196pt
2.Yama Rossi 164pt
8 races to go, 200 points up for grabs
"A" race is forgotten the Championship that counts...

I'm American and naturally I'd like to see the Americans do well,
whether it's Nicky, Colin, or Hopkins, but failing any one of them
having a real shot at a championship, I'd like to see the season
outcome in doubt as late as possible. It's just more entertaining that
way. If it's Stoner vs Rossi in the last race for all the marbles,
that's great stuff and I'll be glued to the television.
But as far as bigotry is concerned, I'd have to say the Americans have
no monopoly around here. There's no shortage of posters who love to
put down the "septics" in any context. >> Stay informed about: Sachsenring day 1 spoiler |

I'd go further and I'd contend I'd like the season to turn in a way that
puts even more riders in true contention for the title with a few races to
go. And if were a group of 3 Americans, hey, it's cool by me, and
furthermore nothing I haven't seen before in 30 years of following MotoGP...

I think one has to know the history of this newsgroup. The few people here
that truly aggressively put down American riders are a recent phenomenon,
and I'd say it's simply a recent reaction to MN and T3 venerable,
long-standing tradition of blatant bigotry and utterly ignornat provincial
mindset. On either side, to me it's astounding people chose to showcase
backward ignorance as publicly, but hey, to each their own.
I don't even know why or if Americans are called "septics". I do know
American riders dominated what could be called the Golden Age of MotoGP.
When I hoped for someone -preferably Sheene- to beat Roberts Sr, it was not
because he was American. It was because he seemed to be cold, distant and
arrogant. I was wrong: Roberts was a highly intelligent rider that changed
MotoGP for the better in many ways. His stand-up against the FIM was the
best thing that happened for the series. I find it very entertaining to see
that those who claim the series if European-biased *now* would probably have
never made such a claim when Roberts happened to be winning. Even though the
FIM was a crusty, arrogant, aristocratic European organization of the worst
kind at the time. I also thought Uncini kind of a bore. Heck, Criville was
about the most boring personality in racing in all time. I have never cared
a whif for a rider's nationality, my favorite riders have come from many
flags... and most of them have been -like most racers- utter individualists
that didn't seem to be particularly nationalistc themselves...

WSB ----SPOILER----- - What a great day!!! The racing in WSB and WSS was excellent, really entertaining watching the highest calibre of racing. Max B and James T were superb, race 1 was nail biting, Toseland was tenatious, not intimidated by Max at all but in the end Max..
QP (spoiler) - Vermulen Stoner De Puniet Melandri Hopkins Edwards....the first non bridgestone. Week in week out, Stoner is consistent. The Bridgestones must have something in the wet, they seem to really do well in these conditions. Maybe a change if weather dries... |
