Well well, I never expected Stoner to be so fast there, this is the
slowest track on the calendar and he is the fastest man of the day,
blitzing them all in FP1 and 0.35 secs ahead of Rossi in FP2. He
really has got that Duc working well, yet again he proves it's not
just the power and top speed thats making him look so good. Of course
whether the bike combo has the endurance during the race remains to be
seen but he is certainly off to a good start.
Not so good is Hayden who was only 17th fastest during FP2 and failed
to improve on his FP1 time, don't know whats going on there, he likes
the track and the bike seemed to be working for him prior to this
meeting.
At this stage there doesn't seem to be any apparent tyre advantage
either with all 3 manufacturers in the top 5 (yep Dunlop 4th fastest).

That was quick - one good result, beats Pedrosa, and he starts getting
the "Sete motors"! I guess it's better than the remote tire oiler that
they activated on him at LeMans and Donington, though... >> Stay informed about: Sachsenring day 1 spoiler |

Best bit of live TV I've seen in ages. Hayden blows the engine good and
proper on the start straight. The session ends 2 minutes later. Toby and
Julian are talking to Randy live on the air and pointing out where the
metal bits are they can see from the commentary box. As the session ends
Randy jumps the fence and is retrieving bits of crankcase. Then he goes
"Hey Dudes, I've got a valve head! I'll tell you what, we'll auction the
bits for Riders for Health." Then Julian says "Valve head? Oh, right.
It's 'Hello Rodney' then."
Which is all a bit serious for Honda and Hayden. Embarrassing for Honda
and not exactly good for Hayden's confidence.

Wow, a major grenade job, huh? You're right, that wouldn't be a huge
confidence building moment!

I gotta go to Donington next year. I'd pay for that.
Go fast. Take chances.

Yup. The conrod went through the spark plug and then took out the ECU.

>Wow, a major grenade job, huh? You're right, that wouldn't be a huge

I was also checking out the Honda exhausts. Checa has the original oval
holes in the bellypan. Melandri has the same exhausts as Pedrosa and
Hayden are now running. Looks like Honda are not just playing the usual
games with the two Repsol riders but with all the satellite teams as
well. Odd rumours that Pedrosa is using the engine settings that Hayden
was using at Assen. Hayden was into the pits half way through for a
front spring rate change. But Randy Mamola reported it initially as
undoing the triple clamps as though they were also changing the offset.
Whatever, the front end confidence problems seem to have returned.
So it goes. No change there then.
There's a corner at Sachsenring where they come over a left hand brow,
off camber and sort of surf off to the right under power before tipping
in again for the next left. Last year Hayden (and others) was
spectacular though there as he had both ends drifting with the tail
hanging out. This year everyone was much more inline and it looked like
the front and rear were taking a series of small steps. Elsewhere as
well, the 800s seem to have changed the game with noticeably different
lines to last year. The bottom of the waterfall looks nasty. There's
quite a bump just where they get off the brakes and really tip it in. As
that's a major passing point, somebody's going to lose it big time
there.
This time last year Melandri was on 1m23.145. Today Stoner did 1m22.737
I reckon a 1m21.5 is on for final qualifying. Maybe lower.
Little story about Stoner. He had one crash in practice this year. He
was running with the sun at his back reflecting off the instruments and
didn't see the light that says the traction control system had borked.
He went for the big handful on the exit of the corner and it spat him
off because there was no traction limiting.

And without Bridgestone neither would be on the podium. Look at Ducati
relative to Suzuki and Kawasaki - they have made less progress since
last year than either of those two. So all the progress is relative to
Michelin-shod Yamaha and Honda. And that's only Stoner - Capirossi can't
make the damned thing work for him at all.
So really another case of European failure all around... >> Stay informed about: Sachsenring day 1 spoiler |
