Post subject: A Rolls Royce it ain't

I treat my KLR650 like a ratty old pickup truck. I don't care about
scratches (hell, half the bodywork isn't on the bike,) and maintenance
is a dirty word. Literally.

So, I'm getting ready for the Utah trip, and I needed to rig up a tank
bag. Yesterday, when I took off the saddle to run the strap, I dropped
a bolt. I heard it go "click click," then nothing. I looked
everywhere, in the bike, on the clean concrete driveway, even in the
nearby planter. No bolt. hmmm. The mysterious case of the disappearing
bolt. I gave up and forgot about it. Today, on my home from a ride,
just as I turned the last corner, I heard a "clankety clank." Aha! The
bolt, I thought. I pulled over and tried to turn off the engine. It
wasn't the bolt - it was the friggin key that fell out of the
ignition! There it was in the middle of the street, and my bike was
still running. I guess I have to duct tape the key to the bike now.

Certifiable rat bike me thinks. The bolt is likely still with the bike you just
have to be willing to look for it. You'd be amazed the places stuff like that
gets where it does no harm.

That's what's cool about rat bikes. You don't need keys!

Never told anyone, but when I owned a '85 HOnda NighHawk 650 a while
ago, the ig. $witch had fallen apart so I just rigged a Radio Shack
SPST toggle switch on the RH headlight bracket so anyone could have
started it up anytime they wanted to. (no-one ever did as far as I
know). The key still locked the steering and the seat, so that's all I
needed it for. When I sold it, the new owner just laughed when I
showed him how to start it. I talked to him about a year later and
*he* never fixed it either!

My ST has what's termed: Death Valley, or, The Valley of Death. I think it
has something to do with where you'll end up after trying, with no success,
to get the dropped item out of the "Valley" wihtout totally dissassembling
the bike.

Suicide comes to mind. Wink

Even better. I have a magnet on a long stiff wire. It's pulled knives
from behind the fridge, oil drain plugs from a black vat of goo, and a
bunch of other good things from inaccessible places, but it couldn't
find the lost bolt.
