GI Jane and I left from Battley's Harley in Rockville at 9am yesterday along
with a couple thousand riders for the 50 mile trek to the Pentagon parking
lot. We arrived at 10 and were in the middle of a pack of (my estimate)
25,000 bikes. The Washington Post had a number like 400,000 but thats too
rediculous to be true. The lot was packed. If one bike laid over, we all
would have been screwed. The ride downtown started at noon. Two hours
after the first bike left, we started up and got in line. We finished the
parade down Constitution Ave and back around 3:00. What a fricken ride!
Fantastic people riding and watching. Not much politics and a lot of
patriotism. It's what Memorial Day is all about.

I was there too. Let Lancaster Count PA, 7am arrived at DC about 11:00.
Watched the parade go by. It began at 12 noon and the last bikes came
through at 3:45.

At the Pentagon there were 2 parking lots full of bikes, some from our
group were in the second parking lot. They said that parking lot filled
that they had to use an additional "drive" to park the over flow. I have
not seen an official count. There were two extimates I heard, first was
100K bikes in parade other is 300K bikes in ride. If the paper put it at
400K then I would tend to belive it to be closer to the top number.

If the parking lot was full, then there were well over 200,000 bikes
there. IIRC the lot supposedly holds about 250,000 bikes if packed in
correctly.

idunno.
i'm thinking a 4 x 10 foot parking spot/bike. it would take some 90 acres
to park 100,000 bikes. the lot i was in was about 30. also, if the ride
was 4 hours, 2 bikes per second over the Arlington Memorial Bridge would
make the total around 30,000.
i could be wrong. as a matter of fact, i can't remember the last time i
wasn't.

if you used a 4x10 spot, you could fit almost 1,100 per acre, so it would
take 90 acres to put 100,000 bikes, but when I was there in 98, it was
more like a 3x8 spot per bike, which gives you just over 1800 bikes per
acre. Also, it was more like 4-6 bikes wide going across the bridge.
When I was there in 98, the last person didn't leave the lot until well
after 4pm (I was in the middle of the lot and didn't leave until almost
3pm).
