I'm considering purchasing of a Roadstar Silverado, (1670cc). In an old
review I found published back in '00, horsepower was rated at just over 50.
Has Yamaha beefed the motor up any over the ensuing model years?

IMO there is a drastic difference between advertised HP and actual usable
HP.
I have an '03 and I believe the advertised HP was 54 but I don't pay
attention to that stuff which is why I am not sure.
I have made a couple of simple and inexpensive modifications that you can
learn about by going to www.delphiforums.com and looking at 'RoadStar
Riders'. This is an international forum and has some really experienced
folks that can help you wring every pony out if that is what you want.
Someone on the forum who has much the same set up as I do reported dynometer
results of 68 HP, more than enough for a relatively heavy v-twin cruiser,
again, IMO. Real world fuel economy for me is in the 45mpg range and I can
keep up with anything out there in my class with ease.
The only mods I made were opening up the stock exhaust which gives you a
mellow yet authoritative sound, put an aftermarket aircleaner which the bike
needed anyway(poor Yamaha design)and re-jetted the carb. Total cash outlay,
$300, the grin in the wind---priceless!

Thanks for the feedback. I believe I'll lurk the forum for awhile. I just
saw the pricey "speedstar" setups offered through Yamaha, and it occurred to
me that for the added expense it may be more worthwhile to just buy the new
Stratoliner model. Wish the gas tank were bigger on it though.

An FYI... found another review of the bike for '04. In it, Yamaha had
claimed to make changes to the engine that increased hp by 15%.
