First time here and only been on a bike 2 times in 20 years. I was wondering
if this is a good starter bike? I am 6'4" and hit 300 on the scale and the wife
is an occasional rider. I like the bike not the 13,000 price but willing to pay
if its the bike for me. I also hate the idea of buying one when I cant ride it
till I buy it. Any comments?
Kevin

It's a great starter bike for someone your size. It's also a great
intermediate and expert bike for someone your size Wink

I've been riding since the early '70s. Rode Honda, Yamaha, and two Harleys.
I bought the Midnight Star in March 2003 ( an '03 model) and I absolutely
love it. I am 6'3" and weigh in at 265. I am comfortable on it. I had
moved the floorboards forward 3" with a kit, but took them off just recently
and put an engine guard so I can put foot pegs on it and stretch out more.
Its like every motorcycle I ever had, including the Harleys, you keep
wanting to add something. A bigger person like us looks good on the Road
Star. It is just a big looking bike. I added saddlebags and windshield and
driver's backrest. I have it set up for me and I am very comfortable. It
runs good and sounds great. I had the dealership install Vance & Hines Long
Shots mufflers and rejet the carberator and put a hi-flow air cleaner. It
sounds absolutely fabulous. It sounds better than both of my Harleys did.
Except for the recall, which is in the transmission and being taken care of
by Yamaha, I would highly recommend the Road Star. I plan to have this bike
for my last one. I'm 56 and at the rate I put miles on, it should last my
lifetime.

Thanks for all the replies. I feel more comfortable with the extra knowledge. I
will be going to bikeweek to go for a test ride of the bike in a couple of
weeks
Thanks

You should find a dealer that will let you test drive one. My dealer
here in Arizona let me try one today and I wound up trading in the
Suzuki Volusia I rode to the shop on. Nice bike with ALOT of torque.

sounds quitier than the Kaw but the Kaw did sound more like a Harley which
where I live I need that sound to keep the sr. citz at bay if you catch my
drift

Good advice. PLUS, there are several places around the country that have
rentals available as well.
Personally, I bought a 1600 Roadstar Silverado, 2003. I rode 'em all (well,
most) and the Roadstar seemed best for smoothness and comfort.
There are simple and not easily detectable ways to increase the volume on
the pipes. A really good source of information for all things connected to
Roadstars is to be found at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.delphiforums.com." target="_blank">www.delphiforums.com.</a> Click onto the Roadstar
Riders forum and learn things you never even thought about--I know I did.
On the start page for the forum there are some links near the bottom of the
page that show you how easily stock exhaust can be 'turned-up'.
Buying a bike based on the volume of the pipes will NOT make you a happy
camper in the long run.
Good luck and enjoy the wind!

I am looking at the Road Star Midnight Silverado. I don't do nearly so much
damage to the scales as you do.

I wouldn't call the Road Star a starter bike by any stretch of the
imagination. It might make a fine machine, but it is the end of the trail,
not the beginning. You may very well start at the top, and that is fine. But
starting at the top merely limits the climb.

You can save some significant coinage if you would consider a used bike. I
have a local dealer with a 2000 Road Star that has 18,000 miles and a $7,000
price tag.
