The recall was for Road Stars which started during the 2001 models so they
weren't all included. It was then broadened to include all 2002 and 2003
models. Whether a 2001 should be included can be determined by the VIN. I
have a 2003 Midnight Star edition and had my recall done. It was something
about abnormal wear possible where a circlip in the transmission could break
and lock up the rear wheel. I have had my Road Star for a year now and
absolutely LOVE the bike.

Thank you for the information, Jim. Tell me, please, what did taking care
of the problem entail? Removing the transmission? Disassembling the
transmission? If I bought a Road Star, how would I know if the "recall" had
been done? Thank you in advance and by the way, the Midnight Star is my
favorite. I like the chrome front fork!

I am looking at a 2000 RoadStar. By the description of the recall, my
particular bike is not affected, is this correct?
If the bike I am looking at is affected, how can I tell if it has been done?

You might want to take a look at the pdf document at this link:

Please note that this document requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (or some other
software that will read .pdf files. File size is about 281 KB

also if you contact yamaha customer service (head office) they should be
able to apprise you if the recall service had been performed on the bike in
question. The dealer invoices warrenty work to yamaha, and the vin of the
bike is linked to their (yamaha's) service records.

The recall was pretty involved. They had to remove the engine and split the
case to replace the suspected parts. On the up side, many people, myself
included, took the advantage to have them install high compression pistons,
a Dyna 3000 which allows you to control your advance curve, ported intake
manifold, heavy clutch springs, etc. It made the bike a power house. You
have good taste, the Midnight Star with all the black and chrome looks
mighty fine indeed.
The dealers are supposed to stamp a star type emblem on the plate where the
VIN is located, but I don't know that they are doing it. Yamaha customer
service could easily tell you if you can give them the VIN. Customer
service number is 1-800-962-7926. Some people have complained about the
people there, but I was nice to them and they were nice to me when I
contacted them with some questions on the recall.

As of the last word, the 2000 models weren't included. The earlier
manufactured 2001s weren't either. It started somewhere later in the '01
production.

One could probably get the Recall Status directly from the dealer by
plugging the VIN into the computers there.
When I bought my 3 Series BMW almost 4 years ago, I went to a dealer that
was not the selling dealer, and they ran the VIN for me for free. It seems
logical that Yamaha has similar computer capabilities.

You folks have been a great help to me, but all this makes me a little
nervous and disappointed. The reason the Road Satr appealed to me was the
high price of Harleys and the predictable reliability of Japaneses bikes.
Should I now shy away from the Road Star or are you guys happy with the
"fix"? My friend here who is a Harley freak, but who apppreciates all
bikes, says that the process you all have described is serious stuff,
especially on a bike so new. All that disassembly would surely someday
affect the bike.
Well, thanks in advance. This is my last post on this subject...I feel like
I have beat this horse to death, but we're talking about a lot of money for
this guy.

often maintenance requires disassembly.
you could always buy a bike that didn't need the fix. one

I also found it very disappointing. I've had two Hondas and two Yamahas
(including my wife's bike). I've been very happy with my Virago -- except for my
disappointment over Yamaha discontinuing them. I had just begun seriously
considering the Road Star when I got word of the recall. As I learned more
about the recall, I was more disturbed. I'm not in any hurry, so I'm watching
this one for a while.

I'm with you on both of those.

Time will tell, which is ok for those of us who don't own a Road Star and are
simply watching to see how all this pans out. Different story for the owners.

Again, we're in the same boat.
Two other points:
1. This horse ain't yet dead.
2. If you find the Road Star recall disturbing, get your hands on a copy of the
March 2004 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News and read the article beginning on
page 21. (You might want to share with your Harley riding buddies, too.)

Is the recall serious stuff? Absolutely
I am concerned about the future of my RoadStar? Not at all!
Before the work was done I toured the shop at the dealer that was doing the
work and watched to see if it was neat, tidy, organized and clean. I asked
about training and was shown the 'Certificates' for the two wrenches that
were to be the ones doing the recall work.
The only things that pissed me off was the time I couldn't ride and the fact
that the general public lost enough faith in RoadStars to drive the resale
value down almost two grand overnight. I didn't buy the bike to add to my
portfolio though, I bought it to ride, and to ride for a long time.
As long as the work was done by a decent shop it is not all that big a deal.
No worse than having to rebuild a carb and replace brakes and water pump on
a car, in the same weekend.

I have a 2001 RoadStar, that was not affected by the recall. I feel lucky
that
I do not have to send my bike to the shop right at the begining of the
season. Many of the people I ride with have Road Stars that ARE affected by
this recall.
The thing that bothers me the most, is the way that Yamaha is dealing with
this situation. All the shops in my area have a waiting list a mile long.
Yamaha says
not to ride your bike untill this recall has been performed.
I understand that this is a big repair, (time consuming) but it seems that
Yamaha
could find some other way to deal with it. There must be some way to get
everyone taken care of in a timely fashion.
I still have to say, that even if my bike were affected.... I would still
tell anyone thinking about buying a Roadstar to GO FOR IT.
I've test driven the FatBoys etc. and sure Harley has done a great job
brainwashing everyone into believing that they must spend all their money
on a sub-standard cruiser... all that aside, I feel like the 1602 roadstar
has
more power, a better feel, and is an overall better value (and a better
bike!) than
all the others out there!
Put some Vance and Hines longshots pipes on there and replace the stock
seat.
You'll be good to go. Here is a photo of my bike.
