MCN have a big cover about Ducati making a road going version of their GP
bike.

If they did this wouldn't that prevent them from racing it as it would no
longer be a prototype?

Yes.

I can only imagine that any road going replica would be sufficiently
different, such that the MotoGP bike could still claim to be a
prototype.

you know, I always thought I knew what "prototype" meant. Apparently I
don't.

heh. Good point.

From the FIM technical regs "Four stroke motorcycles participating in
the MotoGP class must be prototypes. Those that are not entered by a
member of MSMA must be approved for participation by the Grand Prix
Commission."

Seems like the FIM don't know what a prototype is, either.
