I hoping someone knows the unbiased answer.

Are there any adjustments that have to be made to this bike
every time you take it in for service? I was told that the
valves had to be adjusted everytime on the scheduled
maintenance intervals. (4,000 miles) Is this true. Or is
this suggested but not required.

Tim:

For the 650 i believe the answer is no. Certain things like oil filter can
be done with minimal hassle.

I would recommend checking out this other group that has far more
technically adept people in it that can answer almost any Vstar question.

They dont prejudge based on your riding history or preference and have a ton
of good people there.

Or go to http://www.starmotorcycles.com/ register yer bike and read up on
the owners manual. You CAN change oil & filter w/out anything special other
than cold beer. Which I think I'll do this weekend.

It has all the recommended service schedules and breakdowns of what needs
done when.

I have an 1100 and my buddy had a 650 - both require you to take off a
side cover to get at the oil filter - they make an oil relocation kit
that costs about 250 ...
not sure on the 650 but on mine the bolts are different sizes and
there is a little rubber ) ring on one that you should be sure to put
back on. Also make sure you get the oil filter in the correct way
(trust me, it can go in backwards).

I adjusted my valves after about 8K and they weren't far off - I
figure I'll do it once a year (I put on about 5K a yr) - maybe every
other - it wasn't much fun.
Good bike for the money. have fun.
