Post subject: Replacing the fuel tank on a 1996 Yamaha Seca II, is a 1992
Archived from groups: alt>motorcycles>yamaha, others (more info?)

Hi Everyone,

Just posting this with the hope that someone can give me advice.

Unfortunately, my 1996 Seca II has a hole in the fuel tank. I have
been unable to find a used 1996 fuel tank to replace it and am
unwilling to fork over $600 for a new tank on a bike I'm going to
replace next season.

I've seen several 1992 tanks for sale on eBay and have been trying to
determine if they are equivalent.

I've contacted Yamaha to ask if they are identical but all they were
able to tell me is that the part numbers have changed from 1992 to
1996.

From the pictures I've seen the tanks look identical, but I have yet
to see the bottom of the tanks.

Any advice?

Do any other Seca owners have experience in this?

Regards,

Dave M

How big is the leak?

I once patched the holes in the gas tank of my '65 Mustang with a bar of
Ivory soap. I was driving on a dirt road, and hit the tank on the ground
with enough force to put a small hole in it. I just happened to have a bar
of soap in the trunk for some reason, maybe we were on a camping trip -
which would explain the dirt road too. Anyway, the temporary fix lasted
several years until I got rid of the car.

I am not suggesting you do this as a permanant fix, although I would
probably treat is as permanant, I am suggesting a way to buy some more time
to locate a tank with the same part number as yours. You already learned
that the '92 tank has a different part number, but did you learn which years
have the same part number?

Metal tank? I've used silver solder to make a permanent repairs in steel
tanks. If you don't silver solder try a radiator shop.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
