I've been looking for a manual or information about replacing the fork
seals on an '84 Venture Royale. So far, not much luck.

Anyone have any specs (oil level, proper torque, gotchas, etc.) or tribal
knowledge to share on this project. This will be my first fork rebuild,
but I am quite handy with a wrench - usually on the four wheeled variety
of vehicles though.

TIA

I've done this job on an '82 XS400RJ Seca. It's not tough. You will
unquestionably want to beg/borrow/steal/buy the manual for your bike.
I have the official Yamaha manual for my bike.

Sometimes a special tool, a "front fork cylinder compression holder,"
is required to enable you to extract a bolt at the bottom of the fork
tube, but a mechanic told me that the bolt could usually be extracted
without that tool. In my case, he was right. I needed no special
tools, other than the usual automotive tools, to do the job.

For fork oil, I used Castrol 10W non-detergent motor oil. 5W or 15W
will provide different damping characteristics.

It's not rocket science.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

There are a few different styles, but the techniques on this page will
work for many bikes. You still need to find the oil quantity. Try
finding a site for the Venture like this one:

Try at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.venturers.org/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi" target="_blank">http://www.venturers.org/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi</a> or for a repair
manual at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.repairmanuals.com" target="_blank">http://www.repairmanuals.com</a>

I hgave had problems with the front fork seals, had to replace them every
year due to bugs splaiiering on the fork and then cutting out the seals.
Last time I replaced the seals I put a set of gubber gators from a dort
bike, had to cut the ends off anf the corrigated part just fit over the fork
and telescoped with the movement of the fork. I havent had to change seals
for 4 years now and it doesn't deter from the looks of the cycle at all.
