If it's engine noise, I'd guess the cam chain tensioner's toast. I
call it "engine marbles" and you'd be surprised how much noise the cam
chain makes slapping around in there without a fully-functional
tensioner. Replacement was very easy on the Blackbird, and
inexpensive. I took a half hour to install at 40K miles, working
slowly.
One of those things Honda chronically gets wrong, along with
regulators and stators. Any or all should be considered "routine
maintenance" on various late model Blackbirds, Viffers, and F3/F4's.
Of course if the sound really comes and goes, that might not be the
issue at all.
