HI I am getting this rattle noise at around 5000 - 5500 RPM's. The noise
appears to be coming from some where close to the front of the gas tank or
about where my head would be positioned when riding....Has anyone else
experienced this on a 2001 Honda CBR F4i? Or any suggestions.. When the
RPM's drop below 5000 or above 5500 the noise is gone!

I had this exact same problem once with my R1. Turned out that the bolt on
the front of the gas tank, attaching it to the frame behind the steering
head, was starting to work its way loose, and the bracket it passed through
was rattling. So I put a dab of LocTite Blue on the bolt and snugged it back
down: problem solved.

I get that on my 954. The next time it happens try sticking a couple of
fingers between the guage cluster and windshield. If it dissapears that's
your answer. I'm not sure how everything is set up on the F4 but it sounds
like the same annoying noise I get. A vibrating windshield isn't much of a
problem at least.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Or any suggestions..

Sure... to pin point any rattle on any motorcycle employ the palm of
your hand and give the suspecting area a good jab in order to repeat the
noise... employ a rubber mallet in the same manner if your suspect the
exhaust system or frame...

I had what sounds like the same problem with my '02 F4i.
There was a known problem on the '01 and '02 F4i's with the cam chain
tensioner. Honda replaced it under their "Customer Satisfaction" guarantee,
but not under warranty since it was only an issue on certain sequences of
serial numbers. You may want to check with Honda and see if this is the
problem. To pinpoint it, see if the sound is coming more from the right side
of the bike directly below the gas tank as opposed to the left side. If so,
this may be the problem.

If it's engine noise, I'd guess the cam chain tensioner's toast. I
call it "engine marbles" and you'd be surprised how much noise the cam
chain makes slapping around in there without a fully-functional
tensioner. Replacement was very easy on the Blackbird, and
inexpensive. I took a half hour to install at 40K miles, working
slowly.

One of those things Honda chronically gets wrong, along with
regulators and stators. Any or all should be considered "routine
maintenance" on various late model Blackbirds, Viffers, and F3/F4's.

Of course if the sound really comes and goes, that might not be the
issue at all.

As other people have suggested, it's probably the cam chain tensioner. If
the noise is worse when the bike's cold, then it's almost definitely the CCT.
You can probably safely ignore it if it is the CCT, but if it really bothers
you go get an APE manual tensioner. Replacing it with another Honda CCT will
just mean that the noise will come back within 10k miles or so.

Thanks for the input guys! The bike only has 8000 KM on it and just over 3
years old. Do you know how long will stand by it with their 'satisfaction
guarantee'?

Depends on the dealer (at least here in the US). But if it really is the
camchain tensioner, replacing it with a Honda part will just mean that the
problem will go away for a while and then come back. If you want to not have
to worry about it again, buy a manual tensioner like this one:
<http://www.cbrzone.com/sprockets.html>. Or just ignore it.

It is indeed the cam chain tensioner. I told the mechanic there was a
rattle at 5000 RPM's and he knew right away what it was. No sense in
replacing it since it would come back after a few hundred KM.. I guess I
will live with it for now.

Just for your reference in case you change your mind - I replaced mine at
2800 miles for the same reason and the noise hasn't come back yet. The bike
now has 11,800 miles on it.
