For those of you who have email/news account on the ukrm.co.uk
server, you might notice a slow down in performance over the next
week or so (and no access from 5am today until now-ish)

Apologies but the machine locked up converting my MP3s Smile

And after further inspection it needs some TLC [1] for which I've
ordered the parts for. When these bits arrive it'll be down for the
whole day [2]. Or longer (3~4 days) if the repair doesn't work [3]

Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

frag

[1] Umpteen capacitors on the motherboard are faulty having dried
out. (Abit BP6)
[2] Requires stripping the whole machine completely, removing
mobo, removal of faulty bits, cleaning it up, soldering new ones in,
re-assembling and crossing fingers...
[3] Last resort is ordering new mobo, CPU & memory.

Thats the one. Stealing an incomplete formulae... dopes Smile

I've seen it said on other sites that TVs, domestic appliances, DVD players,
loads of electrical things have ended up with these dud caps in them.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Dr Ivan D. Reid"
<Ivan.Reid RemoveThis @brunel.ac.uk> saying something like:

My network switch had a dud capacitor, I replaced it and now it's as

I think that the same thing has happened to my Compaq Q vision monitor.
It was the only one I had that would work with my Playstation2. :/

According to the link I posted it started 2-3 years ago, but
obviously its origins go back a little bit further.

Thanks for the info.

Come to think of it, for the price it would cost me to sort it + replace
the knackered ide disk drive in it, I could pick up a good Sparc Ultra
base unit off fleabay.
