I've got some MP3s on my hard drive that I'd quite like to share with
someone with a connection.

So; presumably I want some of VPN? Or is it just a question of sharing
that drive with a specific remote computer?

Keep the answers simple; this is me we're talking about.

XP I assume?

You'd need any of:
1) VPN server. Either the one built into XP IIRC or into a router
2) FTP server (as suggested by Loz H)

TBH 2 is probably simpler, although your router will probably need
fettling, but then it would for one as well

Your very own FTP server. If you're sharing anything decent, feel free to
share the usename/password you set up for it...

XP has an FTP server as one of the optional components , so thats dead easy
to set up.

All you would need to do then is create a rule on the router to forward
incoming traffic on the appropriate ports to your PC

That I didn't know. Wonder if it's any good

well.

Depending how paranoid you are about security, "Waste" is pretty good
for small groups of users to (privately) share stuff. It was originally
created by the winamp guy, it only appeared on the web for a few hours
before AOL pulled it, but it's still around. eg
http://waste.sourceforge.net/
