Hey kids...I'm kind of in a dilema...Figured I've been married long
enough..maybe I'll test my luck and get a new bike..hehe...anyway, me local
dealer has 03 mille's for $10,800..if that weren't bad enough he's got a haga
rep, comes with the full akro dual exhaust & chip, full ohlins, and oz wheels
for $15800...the exhaust alone is probably worth around $2500, as are the front
forks...Im gonna have to do the exhaust anyway so wtf, right?? Even though I'm
not much for the boy racer graphics the haga seems like a pretty good deal at
that price..Pretty much wouldn't have to do anything else to it accept the
servicing.....
The downsides - I'd have to trade me 929 in, which I have a feeling I would
regret as it really is a great all around bike...and: I like to do an
occasional track day...I'd be horrified to scratch the haga replica...not to
mention parts are costly and practically unobtainable..
Ok, what should I do??

Steve, a couple months ago I was in the same spot. My nephew had a cherry 02
Mille R, with 3200 miles on it, and was going to sell it to me for the same
price I was going to pay for an 03 RC51, which was , $10,000.. Everybody
told me to go with the Mille R, after all, pound for pound it is a more bike
then the RC51. So, I picked the Mille R.. But, at the last minute I started
thinking about, price of parts, price of service, parts being available, and
shops that work on the Mille..So, I changed my mind and went back to the
RC51.. I am happy with my choice.
However, your case might be different then mine. You can be good with a
wrench, and do most of your work, don't mind waiting for parts if it gets to
that, and prices of service and parts don't matter. If that is the case,
then I would go with the Mille, it is a sweet machine, and even I might
change up and get one down the line..
By the way, a sporting twin is sweet, real sweet!

well, i'm a bit biased, so i won't tell you what to do.
but i will tell you that from my experience, Aprilia parts are no more
expensive than Suzuki parts, and seem to be cheaper than Honda parts (at
least the plastic). it's not a Ducati. i mean, it has the soul, it's just
more refined, more reliable, and less expensive. i know from your nic that
you understand the siren song of an italian motorcycle. which ever decision
you make, i'm sure it will be the right one for you.

Man o man, that Haga rep is nice. Did you see the Colin Edwards one? That
is sweet too!
Aprilia's appear to be bulletproof, and several of my friends have them. I
wouldn't hesitate if you can afford it, and you like twins.

You might want to ask on the only other forum that I attend. It's located

These guys do the work on my 2000.05 RSV R. This is my first bike and it
appears to be bullet proof besides buying the occasional mid from stupid
rookie mistakes. Just my 2 cents.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Need Priller opinions |

Why buy a new one when you can get really great deals on Used ones?
I've seen some low-milage Mille RSV-R's going for low teens, and those
have the chip and can upgrades! I have a friend who has a '01 with
very low milage that needs to sell it, he lives up near Seattle.
Just my $0.02

What should you do? I'll let you ride my '00, you decide.
Resale seems to be sucky on these things. I'd not buy a new one
unless I had money to burn.
Off the showroom floor, Standards and R's desperately need pipes,
chips, and derestriction. Add a thousand bucks to the cost. But as
you say, the Haga rep comes with Akrapovic so that sweetens the deal.
You could not touch that system for two thousand bucks elsewhere.
Of course, consider why they're knocking thousands off the price: no
one will buy them. As yourself why Ducati's slashing prices, too.
Shitty economy strikes again, I suspect. You'll never get rid of it
for anything like decent money. With tax, setup, and all, that'll
still run you roughly seventeen big ones out the door. They're
hella-cool bikes, but that's a lot of dough.
Still, the pretty Akrapovics, black frame, gold wheels, blah blah:
motorcycles are a visceral decision, not logical.
The Haga rep's nice. Now there's an Edwards version. The Edwards is
'03-spec, the Haga '02. There are differences. Moto International in
Seattle had an Edwards on display last week. I don't know much about
it, though Apriliaforum.com has a couple interesting threads. In any
event, buy it and park it: crashing something that pretty would be
unbearable.
I watched a guy auger in an '01 Mille R in yellow the other month
(June) at Pacific Raceways: bet he was pissed. Great bike, but that
pretty yellow/black plastic looks expensive. He threw it down hard in
Turn 4 and the left side didn't look too good. Guess I'm definitely
squeamish about smashing up very pretty bikes these days.
Then again every track day you'll see a couple guys out there on
pretty bikes, riding medium-fast but not pushing the edge. They've
been doing it for years. Usually they come out OK, unless lightening
strikes. Last month I met a guy with a '93 triple-eight who set a
nice, moderate pace and didn't crash. He's been doing this for years,
he said. Guess he knows his own limits.
Milles and RC51s are fine motorcycles, understanding the absolute
performance of inline-fours isn't there in stock trim (add various
race kits, the game changes. Don't ask the cost). They tend to make
up for it in overall competence and low/mid roll-on that's astounding,
but twins are not for everyone. Turns out I prefer inlines at the
track, but that's me: if you're a street rider and want something
unique, Milles are the bomb. They run reliably, with very few horror
stories. Frankly, dollars-to-donuts with equal riders your 929 could
spank it, but again: depends what you want in a bike at this point in
your life.
Best of all, you could buy my '00 for $7,500, fully setup and ready
to go. Mine's half the cost, with properly-setup suspension, intake,
exhaust, etc. It'll run forever.

Yeah, I've posted on that site, lots of great info...I wish we had a shop like
that around me...our only priller dealer is a bunch of meatheads...I called
yesterday morning inquiring about their 03 mille's in stock, the salesman was
supposed to find out what was available and call me right back, never
did..guess the arent too interested in selling bikes..

Yeah, I'm not big on all the graphics and the initial price seams hi, but if
you really think about it, who isn't going to put some kind of exhaust on a big
twin..and the nicest one seems to be the akro twin can deal, which is easily
$2500..so say I buy the standard mille for $10800, add another 2500 for the
exhaust and your at, say $13500..well, the cheapest ohlins road and track forks
will set you back another $2500, then there's $800+ for the rear ohlins, plus
the oz wheels...$15800 don't seem so bad..specially when you have a bike that
doesen't really need anything, cept maybe a different rear spring on the rear
shock..
Anyway, we'll see what happens..I probably won't do anything but the price
makes it very tempting...
By the way, I think the original haga price was $18900..

I bet the Buell pulls really hard. I know my old Cyclone pulls pretty
darn hard and the xb has more torque and weighs 50lbs less then my
ride. I think the XB9s is the best bang for the buck as the xb12 cost
to much.. You stick a race kit on the 9s and it will walk away from
my ride and even take it off the line. The thing about the Guzzi is it
has no torque and it is shaft drive. In other words NO WHEELIES!
Ever hear what it takes to replace the u joint on the Guzzi? It is a
nightmare. You have to pull the swing arm to get to it then the u
joint cost an arm and a leg. Also, the Guzzis are the Harley Davidsons
of the sportbike world weight wise. My good buddy would be very mad
at me for calling a Guzzi a Harley. . I am a Guzzi fan though. The
Priller just doesn't have the looks IMO and the price is redicoulous.
That said I love the motor.

LOL...that does sound like a nice deal..nobody is reall selling bikes right
now, specially hi dollar models..economy just flat out sucks...and in all
reality the 929 probably is a better all around bike, more power, and not far
off in the handling dept..I'll probably just hold off and keep an eye on the
prices...I'm sure they will drop toward the end of the season, specially when
the 04's start showing up..

Hi Coleman, I forgot about that..I remember you agonizing over which to get..My
situation isnt too different from yours..I'm no wrench..I hear with certain
exhaust setups you have to remove one of the cans to get the lower fairing off
(on the mille)..Also, the oil change looks a little more complex with the dry
sump...But, like you, I find the mille very enticing...In the end it's gonna be
hard for me to justify selling the honda..its such a good bike, if a little
bland to look at..
