I'd suggest making a reservation this second given it's Valentines
night.

i used to do online tax returns (the first time was the trial, but after
that it worked well). along with the "Submitted" ack there would be an
immediate calculation of how much they owed me, and the amount would be
in my bank account a couple of days later. after a few years of this,
they wrote to say i didn't need to fill in tax returns any more... and
removed my access to online forms

They tried this with me last year, but they can't stop you if you actually
*want* to do them. All you have to do is call them and request your own Self
Assessment form and you'll get one. Which is why I have an extra £450 now
that I didn't have last week

Nice hotel - I've stayed there. I suppose it might be noisy if your
room faces into New Street itself with the giant Tescos opposite.
>She's a vegetarian, and I have famously poor appreciation in food, so

Not sure I'd necessarily call it swanky nor am I sure of their
vegetarian menu but I usually stick my head round the door of Henry's
Chinese Restaurant when I'm in town.
http://www.henrysrestaurant.co.uk/index.htm
Might be good for a second evening out after you've done swanksville.
Walkable from the hotel but you might prefer a cab as the walk is little
"up hill and down dale" round the edge of the Jewelry Quarter.

F had already booked it for herself, as it's the one she uses when
she's got a gig in Birmingham. But she has had our room upgraded.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I've already gone with the one Ben
suggested. Tho F does love chinese food, so maybe next time.

We'll both be back at our day jobs on the Friday. And anyway, I
expect F to wear the sort of heels that are only good for walking from
taxi -> lift -> bedroom
