Having just applied to move from 512Kbps uncapped to a
2Mbps capped at 1MB system, it's because it will suit my
needs better and I can save money.

If I want to d/l large amounts it'll probably be a
movie or two and I'd rather have it quickly and then
(probably) pay the extra for breaching the cap
rather than wait for it at 512K.

Colin
I understand from Tech SUpp that 1Mb customers will be upgraded to 2Mb "in
March" at no extra cost, otherwise I would be moving too. As for limits
(other replies to the original post) I understand I have a 10Gb limit on the
new newserver only (which hasn't been a problem despite the fact that I do
subscribe to some binaries) and am uncapped on other downloads. I have the
Business 500 account that costs around £25pm.
The new newserver nntp is very good as it had a wider spread of groups that
the standard pipex ones, for those less well known groups that you may
asprire to.

I've done my own email, news, ftp, http, blabla for the past 5 years or
so. Had a couple of small problems with things going phut, always
happens when you're on holiday of course, but just write a couple of
shell scripts to reboot the machine if things go AWOL, or reboot the
router if it can't auto-reconnect in 15 minutes.

Having a handy nephew living 5 minutes away who can come round and
press the 'BRB' on whatever needs kicking has helped a couple of times
too Smile

No, Zen is generally viewed as the type of ISP who primarily provide a
damn good, reliable connection for users who are technically savvy and
generally don't need tech support. Email/news is secondary. Or was
anyway, I think they're getting popular and are concentrating on
email/news sides of things to become more "AOL"ish, unfortunately IMHO.

Have you complained about the person who lied to you? I'm damn sure
that the boss(es) would like to hear about any of their sales sheep who
are deliberately lying to gain sales.

Used PlusNet, Demon and a few other small ISPs before Zen. Their
connectivity, news and email were fucking dire (not all for all ISPs
obviously, but still bad). Being on the User Forum Committee with
access to the manager of Force9 opened my eyes to the growing pains of
all ISPs though.

Why on earth are people happy to move back to "charge per Mb download"?
God, 28.8Kbps modems for goalposts and all that...

Oh, and did you know you're all guinea pigs? PlusNet are tied in with
BT as one of BT premier partners or something like that, meaning they
get to test out things like the 8Mb service first, i.e. fix all the
problems amid the wailing and gnashing of users teeth Smile

Lord Frag secured a place in history by writing:

In my case, because that's how the ISP pays for it and it suits my usage
pattern, so I am more than happy to have the ISP's saving passed on. I
don't pay for anything else on the bandwidth model, doesn't seem
particularly rational to me. Increasingly, bandwidth is an irrelevance
anyway.

Correct - but the upgrade will be at the customer's choice. If you're with
Plusnet, you can choose to be a guinea pig, anyone else and you'll just
have to wait. Don't really see a downside personally...

I think that's a fair summation.

That's the vague worry I had; that they constitute the best that's
around ATM.

[1] actually, it's unlikely in my case, as I've somehow allowed myself
to be talked into going for an interview today for a job I don't want,
with an employer I don't want to work for, in a location I don't want to
live in. I'm working on the theory that any agent that good at
convincing people must be worth keeping sweet

It's not a lot of money, but is it value for money? If I switch back to
the crappy BT one, I'll get 95% of the posts, and the occassional complete
renumbering of articles. Then the question is, is a realiable feed worth
10 Euros to me.

 > It's only a matter of time before free servers disappear altogether

I suspect that you may be right. I'd like to think that in the battle of
the ISPs, there is incentive to offer the best services per pound.
However, usenet users are surely a small minority group, and therefore not
necessarily going to be catered for. If I ran an ISP, I'm not sure I
could be bothered with a full usenet feed.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
