I made it back. Just over 12 hours total time. Not bad considering it was
600 miles, one big thunderstorm, 4 gas stops and a 1 1/2 hour lunch.

I made it back as well. The sv650 is still in Steamboat. No joke. First
thunderstorm I ran into, I lost the front cylinder. Crapped out less than a
mile before that big dealership right outside of steamboat. They let me park
it in their shop for the weekend, I'll have to go ride it back or fetch it
on the trailer next week. >> Stay informed about: Ping Troy |

I have a very vague memory of hearing about this before with a SV650 5+ years
ago, maybe on this newsgroup.

I have heard about this problem before, over at sv650.org or one of those
big groups that sprang up when it was new and cool. It doesn't always show
up, and I've made it through rainstorms before without trouble, so I wasn't
worried this time.
But boy, as soon as I hit the first decent puddles, pow, it was gone. I let
it sit for awhile once the sun came out, hoping the heat would dry out
whatever got wet, but no-go.
My guess is it'll either be fine by Monday morning, or it won't and I'll
have to move the radiator around, pull the front plug, maybe check the plug
wire see if I have a nick or cut in the sheathing, and then fabricate some
little cover to stop water from blasting in under the radiator and hitting
the front plug head on. What a pain. >> Stay informed about: Ping Troy |

This used to happen on my old KZ750 as well. I think the newer bikes where
everything is tucked up tight inside a cocoon of plastic and a nice blast of
water from the front tire can't get right to it. The old KZ, I could pull
under an overpass and start working on it right there on the spot, have it
dried out in 5 minutes and on my way. The sv is better than something like
your Honda, but still is a major pain on either cylinder, pull the wire,
pull the plug maybe, dry everything out, sit stuff in the sun, whatever.
I just didn't feel like wasting the entire day, I called the wife for
rescue, made arrangements at the shop, and split. >> Stay informed about: Ping Troy |

You could argue that happening close to home is better than while trying to
drive from Ohio to Denver, and it could be something really bad versus just
some water getting in somewhere it shouldn't, etc etc. Glass is half full
type thing.
I'm just pissed it didn't perform in expected reliable appliance fashion. >> Stay informed about: Ping Troy |

Yeah, well, in the interests of full disclosure I had to mention it, even
knowing how its going to be used against me over the years anytime I make a
crack about a bad Hardley or Buell. >> Stay informed about: Ping Troy |

But now that I think of it, my S3T did strand me once... But I can
hardly blame it on the bike for forgetting to turn the petcock from
reserve back to run, and running out of gas... >> Stay informed about: Ping Troy |
