We have a lot of PDAs that get issued to field staff for in blocks of a
month or more. They all need to be booked out and back in again each time.
We need some way of permanently tagging them with an asset number so we can
quickly reconcile them.
We've tried permanent markers, but they aren't. We used numbered stickers,
but they come off. I don't want to use an engraving tool, because my efforts
would make it look like a 6 year old with epilepsy did it.
Given that the casing of the PDA is metal in places and plastic in others, I
was wondering if there's any sort of chemical/laser etching that could be
done anywhere on it, and whether you can get a kit to do it (like stencils I
guess), or if they need to be sent away.
Any clues?

Don't they all carry a serial number anyway?

I suppose so, but it would need to be small enough to fit on a PDA.

We use embosed asset stickers here that really don't come off unless
you're very determined (i.e. they won't peel off accidentally). I'll
ask where we get them if you want.

Dunno what sort of numbers you're talking of, but would it be worth buying a
small Gravograph machine - www.gravograph.com - for identifying all assets? >> Stay informed about: Ping Cane (or FOAK) - Etching stuff |

Yes, but to access it you have to power off the PDA, remove the back case,
remove the battery and then check the 12 digit alphanumeric serial number.
Hence we want an easy to read asset number on the exterior of the device.
