Problem Solved! by Jesus no less.
If one looks at the damaged head with a slightly out of focus gaze he
can see Jesus, one of the Sons of our Creator not the guy that does my
yard work, in the scuffed bits of metal. Just toss those pics on eBay
and let some zealot fund your repairs.
P.S. It looks like Jesus is eating a moon-pie so you should also list
this on dothan.craigslist.org. >> Stay informed about: Picture of Engine Damage |

Actually the damage more than likely already started when I had timing
chain problems and the bike wouldn't start due to the too stretched out
timing chain. We suspect that or even prior to that is when the initial
valve damage occurred and just got progressively worse until on my ride
home the valve snapped and the above is the result.
There actually is damage to the cylinder wall though it can't be seen on
the angle from that picture.
I could technically repair the engine for about 1,800 euros and that
includes all labor. But it just doesn't make sense.
I can sell the bike for around 5,000 euros. 3,000 is what the dealership
offered me and around 1,800 would be the repair cost.
So why bother? I just ended up taking the deal for 3,000 and walked away
from it.
After I move I'll look into getting that liter bike. =)

That is one disadvantage to living in Germany.
Back here you could pick up another used engine quite easily and have any number of options for
installing it.
However the timing is pretty good as the riding season sounds like it's about to shut down and
you'll be moving back to the States...

If so you've almost got an R1 paid for over here.

That's a pretty good kitty if it's euros.
Sucks to be without a bike, but it sounds like he'll be set up pretty good

I had the same option here actually. The 1,800 EUR option was for a used
engine + installation.

Yup which is why I went the way I did. Putting a used engine into it just
to sell the bike afterward would have been more of pain than it would be
worth.
That's ultimately what the dealer is going to do with the bike, but I
rather let them deal with selling it afterward than me. =)

Yup 3,000 euros plus I'll be throwing in an additional 1,500 euros into
the liter bike fund for what it would have cost me to ship the bike.
So that combined gives me around, $6,500 to play with towards a liter
bike.
Maybe even close to $6,750-$7,000 by the time I move, most likely in
January if nothing else gets in the way, and the dollar course continues
the way it has been going.

It doesn't have to be brand new, but...then again, I am somewhat tempted
of maybe going the brand new route and not buying someone elses problems.
I mean, had my bike lasted maybe just 100 more miles and the engine would
have self destructed on the next owner and not on me. Knowing this makes
me hesitant about buying a used bike now.
The only place I go looking for buells though is in my mirrors ;P

New is nice, but there's an obvious cost penalty. It's definitely possible
to find well maintained used bikes out there, it just takes more effort and
scrutiny on your part.

Not so sure I would blame this on valve float. The pistons wack the
exhaust valves when they float because they don't get out of the way
quick enough as the piston nears TDC. The intakes don't have that
problem since the piston is near BDC as the intake valve is closing.
Floating the intakes is still rough on them since the valve slams into
the seat without bennefit of the deceleration ramp built into the cam
profile, but exhaust valves getting bent is usually the first sign of
valve float.
I don't know the details of the problem with the cam chain, but it
seems like if the valve had been bent back then there would have been
some popping back through the carb after the chain was replaced. That
and I would expect both intake valves to have been damaged. Could
have just been a bad valve.
