I'm getting a buddy to weld some patches on the bottom of my pipes. A few
holes about 1 - 2" across...

any words of wisdom? will the heat burn more holes in the pipe?

Exhaust pipe is pretty thin gauge stuff to begin with. If it's rusted
through in places, its probably too thin in the area around the holes
to hold a patch even if your buddy is a good enough welder to do it
without 'burn through`. (If he is, he's better than most.)
Any chrome you had left near the weld will dissapear, but you
probably knew that.
The pipes would have to be high temp painted, (or repainted), to keep
em from rusting out again.

Best bet, replace the pipes, pay the man the $2.00.
