I recently purchased a 1981 XJ650 which runs well but needs a little TLC.
This is my first Yamaha (having owned Kawasaki's and Harleys) so I was
wondering if there are compatible parts. I mean, if I see an item on EBay,
like gauges, or something like that, will it still fit my '81? I've done a
little poking around and now know that the XS650 is a 2-cylinder vs. the
XJ650 which is a 4. Obviously the pipes won't match, neither will the
ignition and charging system, but what about chassis parts? Will an XS650
seat fit an XJ650 frame? Are some of the parts the same for the two models
around the same years, ie. 1979-83? Any expert help would be appreciated. I
would like to clean this bike up a bit, repaint the frame and swingarm
(some rust spots need attention), repaint the fuel tank and side covers,
and polish up the engine covers and maybe even the carbs. If anyone has
some advice on fixing up this kind of bike, I sure would like to hear some
of the stories, good or otherwise.
I will try to check this NG a little more often but would appreciate
response via e-mail. Thanks in advance. >> Stay informed about: Parts for 1981 XJ650 |

The xj650 is a super reliable, high performing (for it's age) and popular
bike so parts are readily available on ebay. Virtually none of the parts are
interchangeable with the XS650 but many of the XJ650 parts are
interchangeable with the XJ750. The XJ650 did a quarter mile in 12.7 seconds
which was in the ballpark of 750's back in 81 and would outperform any of
your past Harley's, even though they have twice the displacement.
Good luck
Hank

I'll second what Hank already said. If you have any additional XJ related
questions feel free to post them at www.XJBikes.com.
