Hey guys...
I took the MSF course a year ago and have been riding my uncles giant
Honda Shadow off and on since then. I'm comfortable with riding, but
spend most of the time I practice off the streets. I ussually stick
to parking lots, with a bunch of cones to swerve around, and back
roads around my house, to get used to riding around (a small amount)
of cars.
Anyways, Im looking for an R6 or F4i, and my priority right now is to
get something for a good price. I've seen some bikes offered for
great deals at color schemes Im not too fond of. If I want to have
the bike repainted with the same style as they come new, just in a
different color, can I take it to the dealer or do paint shops offer
that option?
Thanks,
Ray

PS I put in that stuff about my riding background in case anyone feels
like giving me a hard time or better yet, offering some constructive
advice that isnt "dont get a sportbike".

You should be able to find paint shops in your area that have experience
with motorcycles. Let your fingers do the walking, or else find a local
biker hangout and start asking the locals.

Someone else mentioned waiting a little while until getting your dream paint
job. Probably a good idea, at least until you've gotten yourself acclimated
to whatever bike you get.

If you don't know someone to do it dirt cheap deal with the stock paint.
Being new you may even just drop it off of the side stand.

Most custom paint jobs sink the resale value significantly, if you
care. Exception is show-quality, Arlan Ness -type bikes, presumably,
but they're more a labor of love than expectation of significant ROI.

Paint work isn't cheap. Usually you get what you pay for. There's a
guy around here (BrandX, Woodinville WA) who does sport and racebikes
at reasonable cost, but still typically $500 and up. It's a lot of
labor. Racebikes with $500 paintjobs look more than presentable.
Streetbikes with same look like what they are: Ghetto.

Deerslayer's Orange Crush is a perfect example of a decent paint job
at moderate cost, done by BrandX. It won't win any shows, but even up
close it looks fairly good. I've seen other work he's done with more
detail, at greater cost. Presumably there's a guy like BrandX in most
every town, if you ask around. I'd try the local car clubs, too:
paint's paint.

Or you could find the well-regarded autobody shop I contacted in Y2K
to repaint a '97 Bimota YB11: $2,500 and up to match the '00 bike's
silver and blue paint scheme. Pass. Actually, the estimate was
probably "fair" just not in line with what I wanted to pay. Quality
costs money; no way around it.

I have seen a car that was painted with a roller, and yes, you get what you
pay for.

Would you be able to buy the plastic from a different year bike? would it
snap in place? IF they offered a different color scheme in a different year,
then you could do that.
