Hi,
I've commented in the past that my Blackbird seems a bloody thirsty beast,
and just put this down to it being my first "big" bike (ZZR600s before).
However, it seems to be getting a bit worse.
I'm getting somewhere in the region of 6-7 miles per litre (27-31 mpg). I'm
not a complete ham fisted c**t, and on the ZZR600 I used to get pretty much
double that.
When I had it put through it's 8k service (about 1,200 miles back), the
garage told me that the carbs were absolutely filthy, and that it was
running a bit rough. I'm not particularly surprised that they would be in a
bit of a poor state, as the previous owner had put only 4,200 miles on it in
five years. I'm happy to say I've now doubled this Anyway, they
(allegedly) stripped and cleaned them. They certainly tried to charge me
extra for it in any case[1].
In the last week, I've bumped into two other Blackbird owners, and talked to
them about it, and they both said that they get much better mileage than
that. So, assuming that evil pixies aren't sneaking into my garage and
siphoning off petrol, anyone got any ideas on why the poor fuel economy?
Anyone with a Blackbird keep records of how much it drinks?
More specifically, what do I ask *another* garage[2] to look at if I take it
in to them?
Cheers for any advice.
[1] The reason I had the service done early was because it was in for a
misfire. When they (Fowlers) told me that the carbs needed thoroughly
cleaning, I asked if this would have been sorted during an 8k service. They
said yes, so I had it done and 7.2k miles. They then tried to charge me an
extra two hours labour on top. They didn't get it.

Well, to compare. TOG's 1200 Trophy and my FI Blackbird consumed exactly
the same amount of fuel over a fast'ish 70 mile run through France. We
know cos we'd filled up together at the start and after 70 miles [1].
[1] Saw an open fuel station in France and thought it'd be rude not to.

Nah, spirited riding in France and I was getting 40+ mpg.

Ok, real advice here. Take it to Pete at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.blackbirdspares.co.uk." target="_blank">www.blackbirdspares.co.uk.</a> He
knows most things Blackbird, does servicing, and charges only £25 per
hour. He's based near Bournemouth so not a million miles away. He's a
genuine guy and will tell you exactly how it is.

It's a big Honda, HTH. VFR never sees much more than 35mpg, and I'm
slower than a very slow thing.
I think it was SD that said that Honda keep chucking fuel in until the
spark goes out, then back it off a bit.....

Well that was kinda what I thought, but when I first got it I seemed to be
getting about 36mpg, and it seems to have dropped. And I've lost weight too!

Could be. Still, even now it's only on 9k after 5 1/2 years. I wonder if I
could chop it in for a fuel injected one and still save money?!

Not had a Blackbird so cant be too specific, but you dont mention types of
journey you're doing - maybe the other riders only go on 3000 mile tours but
you do a 20 mile round trip commute......
In my recent experience (ie. before today) my 955i does (did?) about 30mpg
round town due to never getting past 3rd gear.
But at a steady 110mph on the motorway in top, it'll easily do 50mpg.
You say that you got better mpg from the ZZR. Again, I'd look at gears used
etc - it had an engine only just over half the size of the CBR so you were
probably using a higher gear, less revs and therefore less fuel... But the
Blackbird will return really good mileage next time you fancy a return trip
to the South of France...

Hah, nice to know all 3 of my ZZRs gave me at least 40mpg when ridden
reasonably hard. I'm pretty disgusted at the fuel consumption of other
big bikes when you consider the weight a ZZR lump has to push around. My
T/ace is pretty crap on fuel too, but it's not a bother.
When it comes to a time when fuel consumption and insurance costs become
a factor in choosing a bike, I'll hang my lid up.

It's not so much that it's too expensive (although obviously I'd prefer it
to be cheaper), I'm just curious as to whether it's actually *right*. As I
said, I have talked to a few other Blackbird owners who felt that it was
unusually low, so I wondered if there was something that could cause this,
and was fixable. Seems not though.

Setting aside any trivial causes like the bike being totally shagged
out, or in desperate need of proper servicing, fuel consumption is going
to be down to your riding style and where you ride it.
In general I seem to get better fuel consumption figures out of any bike
I ride than do others but then I am a great fan of staying in top gear
once I have arrived there. I am sure this makes a difference.

Pretty consistent, it seems, even if it is getting worse.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Dan White" <me DeleteThis @privacy.net> saying
something like:

You're probably using the power a bit more now as you've become more
used to it.

Not a Blackbird but a fat CBR thou: Stab some holes in the air filter

I think low 30s is fairly normal for Blackbirds
