Post subject: Paging TOG...
Archived from groups: uk>rec>motorcycles>classic (more info?)

My mechanic, has stumbled across a one owner from new, 1977 R reg SS50.

Totally original, one owner from new, and with just over 6k on the clock.

The last tax disc on it ran out in 1986!

It's the five speed model, with drum brakes, so he, having done a bit of
research, believes it to be a derestricted bike - he's not ridden it
anywhere yet, as he's currently getting it ready for it's MOT, and giving it
a service.

So, given it is a runner, what's it worth with him just servicing it and
getting an MOT - most of the chrome is ok, a few superficial rust spots on
the tank / frame, but it's totally timewarp original as things stand, with a
bit of surface rust on the can etc.

The wheel rims / mudguards etc., are surprisingly good, given the owner had
the presence of mind to coat most of it with Vaseline before laying it up.

And... if as he's considering doing, he were to refurbish the whole thing,
as in shotblast the frame / tank etc., get all the chrome refinished,
replace all the graphics as they should be (even if it means getting them
made especially), what is it then worth?

TIA

Well, TOG's out at the moment and I don't have much of a clue about
mopeds, but I just noticed that some people seem to be asking stupid
money for really grotty ones.

That aside - if the restoration is done properly, he'll spend *tons*
more than he'll ever get for the bike so it's pointless if he just
wants to do it in order to sell it on afterwards.

he's had the chrome priced up at around £200 - bar the handlebar mount
rubbers, the rest of it is in amazing shape really.

I was trying to nick it off him myself, earlier.

Anyway... graphics aside, he does a lot of work and favours for a major
bodyshop up the road, and they're grateful enough to want to do all the
prepping and repainting of the frame / tank, free of charge.

So all in all, given the time warp state of it (the pedal mechs all work,
and it's *never* been up the road!), it's not in need of all that much -
battery is on its way as we speak.

Lucky bastard, was given the bike by a customer who just wanted it scrapped!

Agreed, too many machines are being restored to a level that was seldom
seen on the original production machine, I find a good original machine
often more appealing than an over chromed lacquered version of the
machine that left the production line.

A 1977 SS50, that was used up until 1986, and it's never been up the
road?

I don't know how, or indeed why, but it's a fake. Has to be.

*up* the road, not *on* the road.

There's a subtle, but crucial difference.

Indeed.

I suppose you have a point. But I also know of a 1981 Honda Melody, in
use until around 2000 that's still only showing 768 miles and has never
been dropped.

So, stranger things have happened.

You will note the original question was asked about the values of it as is,
albeit fettled for the road, or fully restored... Wink

It isn't, honestly - bloke had it from new, hardly used it, then parked it
up.

If it's been up the road, it's hiding it *bloody* well - I'm normally pretty
good at spotting when something has been patched up after an accident, and
this looks spot on in that respect.

I took some pictures of it in my mates workshop earlier... I'll try and host
them somewhere soonish.

It doesn't matter anyway, Fizzies were always faster. Especially purple
ones.

More anecdotal evidence. I never had a Fizzie, but two of my schoolmates
did, in 1976. Both had rich parents (by my standards anyway, rich enough
to buy their sons these things while still at school which mine certainly
weren't) but one richer than the other. The "poorer" had a second hand
purple one which looked a bit scruffy. The other had a brand new yellow
one, complete with disc brake.

They raced one day and the purple one won. There was no question of
greater idiocy on the part of the winning rider as they were both idiots
(and 16 of course) and the race was on a straight road at a heady
50mph-ish.

The yellow one's owner was well pissed off and it was "stolen" shortly
afterwards.

BTW as I recall back to those times nearly 30 years ago, it was a good job
that the purple one was a bit scruffy. Its owner was a particularly good
mate of mine so he let me have a go. It was the first time I'd ever ridden
anything with an engine and I promptly dropped it due to a lack of
appreciation of riding on gravel. But it didn't make any noticeable
difference to it.
