I am finally replacing the cam chain tensioners in the dyna.

I remember you saying your stock cams were scored when you removed them.
Mine look a little worn, but I'm no expert, so I'm unsure about their true
condition. Can you repost the pics of your worn cams so I have something to
compare them to?

I'll post pics of the cams and tensioners on abpmh as soon as I get them out
of the cam support plate.

I'm getting curious about my '99 Dyna engine (FX). How many miles on your
tensioners and what kinda cam? I.E., stock Dyna engine or what?

2001 FXDXT, about 30k miles. The only previous mods I've made were air
cleaner, rejetting of the carb, and slip-on cycle shack mufflers.

I was able to remove the cam cover by dropping the mid-peg/brake pedal only.
I took off the forward heat shield, but I did not have to remove the pipe.
Slow going with an allen wrench, but I think it was less hassle than taking
the pipe loose from the jug. You can examine the outer tensioner just by
removing the cover. However, its been widely reported that the inner one
wears faster. That was true in my case, but I still had a lot of miles left
on them.

To inspect the inner tensioner, you have to remove the cam support plate.
That means pulling the push rods and lifters. I'm putting in the SE push
rods so I can check the inner tensioner next time I get nervous about it.

Sorry guy, I was asleep at the switch and haven't been on the group for
a few days. I just pulled them off the server the other day, but I'll
post 'em to the abpmh in the morning when I get off work.

Posted the pics across the street. This is a pretty common failure on our
bike years.

Thanks.

Mine aren't quite that bad, but they are on their way.

I posted a pic of the worst looking lobe under the thread "30k TC cam
tensioner R&R"

Guess I'll start shopping e-bay for a deal.

Thanks again,

I saw yours over there. Looks kind of like a coin toss on yours as
they would probably last a while longer, but how many times do ya want
to dive into that cam chest?

The newer tensioners are supposed to be made of harder material to
lessen the wear. This and polished chains should double the mileage
before a change is required. Of course this is just a WAG on my part,
but I'm comfortable with this fantasy. Wink

At least one more time...

I pulled it apart last friday. Looked at the cams, posted pictures,
drank a beer, hemmed and hawed about getting new cams, drank another
beer, decided to "sleep on it"

Got up Saturday, surfed ebay & Chi-harley, drank a beer, hemmed and
hawed some more, flipped the proverbial coin and decided to put it back
together with the original cams. Finished up kinda late (mostly cuz of
all the pissin' and moanin' <g>). Surfed ebay, and drank beer late
into the night.

Sunday, adjusted the new adjustable pushrods. Now nice and quiet <big
'ol grin>. Pulled the carb apart to clean it up. Looks like the float
bowl gasket was weeping. Hosed it with gumout and replaced the suspect
gasket. Surfed ebay some more, hemmed and hawed some more, drank more
beer.

Now looking at ebay even harder. Trying to talk myself into a set of
SE203's. Seeing some "A" versions listed, but that's a subject for
another thread.

Thanks for the advice and pics.
Have a couple on me.
