Are there any PGP users left here after all the machinations of the
commercialisation of the product?

Wondering if anyone uses the CKT 08/09 builds and have they been found
reliable in terms of data/disk encryption.
I have a new 4GB USB drive and given all I'm going to carry on it, better be
secure. My old version of PGP doesn't run past W2K.

The PGP ng's appear to be meaningless spam and loony bins unfortunately.

Are you looking at file-based encryption or whole disk encryption?

For the former, maybe gnupg would do the job?

Anything remotely to do with cryptography seems to resemble a loony bin these
days.

Strictly speaking? I suppose not. I use GPG instead, which I either use
for long term storage of sensitive data, or for email via the
Thunderbird's Enigmail plugin where I can't use S/MIME.

I use TrueCrypt for this. I've used a number of products in this area,
and TrueCrypt stands out. I created a "Traveller Disk" for my USB stick,
which basically installs the program onto the USB, with an autorun. You
then create an encrypted volume on the remaining space, and jobs done.

It's not perfect, as you plug the stick in, which takes up one drive
letter, and then you enter your passphrase to mount the volume, which
takes up another driver letter. It doesn't really bother me though.

There are a few more features in there, which are nice.

I use TrueCrypt for this very reason. It's open source, and still being
actively developed.

Sheesh, I paid £17 for a 4GB PNY USB-stick a few weeks ago.

OTOH, last Sunday I opened up my new PC to replace the 2 GB of
533 MHz DDR RAM with 2 GB of 667 MHz DDR-II ram and found the box actually
contained -- 2 GB of 667 MHz DDR-II RAM... Cheap RAM if anyone wants it,
unless I buy a new motherboard too. Sad

Let's hope it wasn't your passphrase too.

> The new owners of PGP apear to have been hoovering the net.

Don't see why. The author was within the licence conditions, and
apparently only stopped because PGP Inc asked him to do so. Then they
changed the licence.

I downloaded .08, but couldn't get the signature to validate, so have left
it. Apparently the .09 betas are stable, according to some posts I read
[1], and the signature validates OK.

[1] So it must be true.
