I need to repaint a number plate, as the black has work off over the
years and now the aluminium of the base plate shines through.

Any recommendations for paints to use direct onto the aluminium? Can you
get matt Smoothrite?

I probably out to repaint the raised letters too as the plastic has
faded, but for this year's MOT they should be fine

I've got a rattle can of satin black Hammerite (smooth finish) in the shed,
so if you're passing we could give it a blow-over.

Catch with spray is that the masking would be a complete bastard -
unless I intended to repaint the letters in silver afterwards I suppose

If you wipe the tops of the letters with a rag to get most of the paint
off when it is still wet you get most of the paint off. The rest could
be polished off.

Prep and clean it with meths, then gently coat the letters with a thin
smear of grease before spraying. Any paint that sticks will come off
with wire wool. Worked nicely on the BMW's castings...

I could try that. Then again an evening spent playing with masking tape
could be very therapeutic

Liquid Mask could also be handy for this, model shops seem to have this
in.

You *can* get satin finish black Hammerite in the normal tin, I've got some
which I got to paint Rangerover bumper, also used it on Norton rear number
plate and finish was excellent even with a brush.
