Purported to be about motorcycling to the degree that
/Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance/ is about
motorcycling...

That's not quite fair. He does talk about riding his bike places. It's
basically `Long Way Round' for reds, with added leching.

Are you expecting to read about bikes, or about a socialist epiphany?

You might find it easier to just watch the film, especially if you speak
the lingo.

I picked the book up in a bookshop for 5 euros. It's largely for
practice. Quite amusing so far - lots of falling aff and breaking the
"Poderosa".

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Paul Carmichael"

As a story of how two young middle-class lads try to shag their way
round S. America it's not bad. Sooner or later the shagging had to stop.

It's about bikes the way Don Quixote was about horses.

Nonsense. As a portable, re-usable non-prescription soporific,

the whole thing's pretty much about the perception of quality (as
referenced by the book's subtitle). But one of Persig's main arguments
is that in order to properly understand what quality is, we should
embrace non-rational or mystic modes of thought as well as the
rational and logical. It's basically hippy philosophy-wank.

> >Go and stand in the corner with Porl.

I suppose Persig's teachings are rather less toe-curlingly wanky than
Ouspensky's, so you at least stand back to back with porl rather than
having to look at him.

Maybe , but pre-intellectual awareness is quite an interesting concept
IMO.
Did you know that he was on the receiving end of a Sokal type spoof in

for "complete bollocks" values of "concept", of course.
