Post subject: Loud pipes

The annual summer haggers are hagging about loud pipes again. True some
are loud when they crank it. Must be those straight pipes and removed
baffle mufflers. I have glass packs which rack off if I really wind it
but are not too loud. I guess most cops ignore loud pipes, there are
already noise laws on the books.

<snip accurate description of the Santa Cruz Mountains >

All so true. I used to ride my Mountain Bike from Los Altos up Moody Road
to Skyline and into the open space districts. It also pissed me off to bike
deep in the quiet forest and still be able to hear the oncoming rumble of
dozens of Harleys. The screaming sportbikes were just as annoying.

Sometimes we would have to ride our bikes along Skyline in order to connect
mountain bike trails. On ocassion a herd of Harleys would pass so close I
could feel the heat from their exhaust and the noise was deafening.

I really despise loud pipes. They are a symbol of how selfish people are.
It has nothing to do with "freedom" or "safety" or "performance", that is
all a smokescreen for immature anti-social behavior and screams "Look at me,
I am sooo cool!".

All that being said, I love the noise at the track.

Sky Londa! Rode through there last year -- nice place, great roads (esp. 84).

I still have the stock pipe and will for quite some time. My bike is
almost as quiet as a car (and quieter than some) when I keep the revs
down and the throttle mostly closed. If I open it up and take it WOT
to redline, you will think an F1 car just raced by.

FLHTCUSEI ? Damn that is like reading a hex core dump! My head hurts, I'm
supposed to be on vacation.

Let me rephrase that for you. Loud does not equal fast or powerful. Nor
does quiet negate fast or powerful.

The last thing I want is for the coppers to hear me before I even see them.
Stealth baby!
