Not a large support team, and not a constant support team, and
regardless how much help they had I still envy them as much as if they'd
had none. I'm sure they've inspired countless riders who've read the
book or watched the series to actually start seriously thinking about
such a trip. I know after I read each chapter in the book and watched
each episode on the DVD I got out maps and started planning the places
I'd go and the path I'd take. They've also done what noone else has
really done before them by bringing adventure riding to the mainstream
public and giving them a riding experience on a much wider scale than
was possible screening Alby Mangels home movies in the local town hall.

Even Sjaak has a tyre sponsor for his bike and a helmet sponsor, and got
help building the custom rear-box for his R1, and crossed the sahara on
his R1 in a convoy of bikes and trucks because he's not *that* hard core
that he'd attempt it solo.

Film crew? You mean a bloke who not only had to ride the whole way but
also had to film stuff as he went, who didn't even have a bike licence
when they started the trip and who'd never ridden anything bigger than a
scooter before he got onto the 1150 Adventure? He should have been the
focus !

I guess I'm one who thought it was all a bit of a wank by a couple of
over-paid and under-skilled movie stars.
Having seen the DVD and read the book, I've changed my mind. I now
believe that it really was a special achievement, done responsibly in
a limited time-frame with plenty of budget restrictions (albeit a bit
less restrictive than mere mortals would expect).
As I see it, the first two episodes are only a warm-up, and some might
turn off after seeing them. However from episode three on there is a
lot to like, so you really need to watch the whole thing. Claudio did
an excellent job filming from the back of his overloaded GS (as Ewan
says in the book, he is the unsung hero of the trip).
I think that the publicity given to UNICEF and its work for the
children of Chernobyl by itself would make the trip worthwhile. There
are a whole lot of other things to like though, which when added
together, elevate my admiration for Ewan, Charley and the whole crew.
Keep an open mind about it, and I don't think you will be sorry.
