Hello... Finally went in for the road test today to get my full-fledged
class 6 motor bike license. ...Good Lord... It was almost as grueling as
my flight test for the Pilot's license.
...I've been a licensed vehicle driver for 33 years, yet this examiner
had me on the highway and back streets for 45 minutes, doing right turns
and left turns, up this street, down that street, etc. ...Is this
procedure standard? Ironically, I can drive my moped on the same
streets, at the same speed, yet just need my regular license. Doesn't
make sense. Just because my Virago is 150lbs heavier. Must be some kind
of bureaucratic reasoning!!. ....Jon

Road test on a bike! I'm not sure I would have passed that. Where
abouts do you live? Pierce county Washigton (Tacoma) has parking lot
tests. You run (the bike) through several tests (tight turn, quick
stop, quick turn, weave, .....) using those little cones. I heard it
was tough so I paid $100.00 for the safety course for experienced
riders (I rode 30 years ago) instead. It's a workout, all day. It's
different because it's a safety course. You run through all the tests
one at a time with the other riders, over and over. Then at the end
of the day if you need a license, like I did, you had to do the tests
again and be graded (by the Highway guy) on how you did.

Congratulations on passing.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

When I was on the waiting list for the MSF course, I went ahead and took the
road test. It was a road test with an unpleasant man as the examiner. I
passed, but didn't enjoy one minute of it.

After taking the MSF course, I probably should've just waited, but it was
tough too.

In British Columbia, here, we have to do the "skills test" first (before
the road test), which is the parking lot (cruise around the cones guy).
...I say first, but actually the whole procedure is: 1) Take the
learners written test -- basic highway and motorcycle knowledge -- must
get 80% correct to pass. 2) Pass a vision, and oral medical test. 3)
Receive a learner's license that has the restriction that you must be
within visual range at all times of another holding a valid motorcycle
license. ...He is called your "supervisor", and must also accompany you
when you go for your "skills test". 4) Book the skills test (must wait
15 days first, I believe) ... 5) Pass skills test....Involves approx. 20
minutes: tight turns, hand signals, slalom around cones, emergency stop
etc. 6) After skills test, the only restrictions left are: no
passengers, and no night riding. 7) Wait minumum 30 days before you can
take the pre-booked road test. Cool Show up for your road test... Don a
flourescent orange vest with a big "X" on the back, and make a spectacle
of yourself driving up and down the main street in town, while a van
with a big "ICBC" sign on the roof follows close behind you for 3/4 of
an hr.... (with 2 guys, one barking orders out for you into an earplug
from a radio you carry in your pocket.) 9) Receive your well-earned
class 6 license. ...These are the requirements if you already have a
vehicle license. It's a lot more involved for those who are starting
from scratch.

Thanks for the congrats. ...Jon

I'd already put on 2500 km. on my bike over the summer, so when I took
the road test... After 20 minutes in, I thought... This is ridiculous,
I'm doing the same basic things over and over again.
...I think the examiners weren't over-booked (being September), so they
were just killing some time before going for lunch.
Thanks for the Congrats, Snapper. ...Jon

The up-side is that it reduces the number of "retards" on the roads.

I think you are correct, Serge, that's why they create so many hoops for
one to go through to get a pilot's license. ...Flying a plane is a
cinch, but having to learn all about navigation and meteorology etc.
....Well, that's what weeds out the odd-balls. Ironically, for the
average weekend flyer, all this material is instantly forgotten, as the
flight service crew are the ones who read the weather reports, and
navigation is accomplished by one's common sense and GPS. ...Jon

Here in Los Angeles, CA, USA you follow a poorly painted yellow
line that ends at a circle. The circle is literally 4 feet in diamater
making
difficult on a trycicle let alone a big cruiser bike. You had to go 2 times
around the circle in one direction, then 2 times in the other direction
(made me dizzy). I went off the lines a
few times but the examiner was cool and let me pass.

I took the MSF class, passed their test & the DMV written/eye test,
and got a waiver for my license. Just went to the DMV, showed my
waiver, and got a M stamped on my license. Now, if only I had a
bike...

The funny thing about the class was that we started with 12 people but
only 8 graduated. Here are the casualties:

#1 - attended the Friday night classroom instruction but failed the
dmv written test Sat morning (which should have already been done
before even showing up for class). Gone.

#2 - rode all day Saturday in hurricane rain leftovers (tropical
storm) but never showed up on Sunday. Gone.

#3 - lost control during simple turning on Sunday, the bike shot off
the course unmanned into the trees, the rider jumped off and needed
medical attention for his road rash. Gone.

#4 - wife of #3 left with hubby. Gone.

What a great weekend just the same. A very good class and great way
to get started in my opinion.
