Laguna Seca Doc Wong December 16th Group at California Superbike School
Hi,
It never ceases to amaze me how much more room we all have for improving our
riding skills. This year I hit a plateau that I thought I wouldn't be able to
surpass, yet did with the help of Keith Code, his instructors and the use of
the "Slide Machine" at the California Superbike School!
Note: While street riding, I've chosen to ride at my old pace (i.e. not any
faster than before), but my skill level and confidence level has improved
dramatically thus riding safer!
I'm putting together the following group:
Calif Superbike School taught by Keith Code
December 16, 2004 (Thursday) Laguna Seca (All Levels)
THESE SPOTS WILL FILL UP QUICKLY!
His schools are extremely popular and fill up months in advance, so here's what
I did to get our group there:
I purchased the spots!! So if you call the school, you'll find it full but not
thru me!
Cost: $395
To register:
1. E-mail me for confirmation and send me a check for $395.
2. Tell me what level you want to do. If you've done a CSS before, which
levels have you done? Note, if this is your first CSS then you'll start in
Level 1 which are the foundational drills that beginners and advanced riders
need.
Write the check out to Harry Wong and mail to my office (after you get a
confirm with me) at:
Harry Wong
C/O Active Life Medical Center

Redwood City, CA 94028
I'll be there to answer any questions or to help you out in any way I can while
we're there!
See below for info about Keith Code in case you aren't familiar with him and
his schools.
You don't have to be a "racer" to attend this school or even have to that fast
a rider! You just have to want to improve your motorcycling skills.
I had a breakthrough during the March 10th CSS at Sears Point. I made a vast
improvement from my previous track times at Sears Point. Andy Burnette said
that he has to work to pass me...and that was a first! It had a lot to do with
Keith's new "Lean-Slide" machine. I can't tell you how happy I am with my new
found confidence. Riding has been so much more effortless and comfortable for
me!
There was even a gal (last year) who had only 1500 miles of motorcycling under
her and she attended the class and did very well!
This school is a skills school that is directly applicable to street riding.
The experience you get will improve your skills and confidence in riding. By
doing these drills, under supervision and instruction by the instructors on
the track, you will be able to go faster under safer conditions. The
instructors will will follow and lead you around the track and help spot the
mistakes you're making and and offer advice on what you can do to improve
your riding.
We'll have two groups: One for Level One-for CSS first timers (regardless of
your skill level) and another for Levels 2,3, and 4 (each level has the
prerequsite of the previous level). Levels 2,3 and 4 are in the same group,
it's just that you get different drills to do but ride in the same group.
THE LEAN-SLIDE MACHINE: EXTRA! EXTRA! Keith has just developed a new
"Traction Machine". This is a ZX6R with special moving outriggers which are
shock mounted to the sides of the bike. This allows the bike to lean over in a
turn and will support the bike if it begins to slide. This is now in use for
level 2 and 4 students to use as a tool to allow students to experience the
limits of traction while leaned over. He does intend to use this device to
test the theories of outside and inside peg weighting.
Are we going to be able to use it? YES! (As long as you're signed up for
Level 2 or 4)
About Keith Code:
He began coaching road racing in 1976. Since that time he has isolated and
perfected techniques that are in common use today in motorcycling. He has
instructed more riders at more tracks in more countries than anyone else in
the world. Keith has been the coach for every American Superbike Champion
from 1983 through 1992. Buy--right now--at least his two books: Twist of
the Wrist and Twist of the Wrist II and read them. I found them invaluable
for street riding.
About the school:
Keith's approach to the track school is very unique in that each class
section explains a specific on track skill you will be doing. Then you go
out and practice that skill. His instructors ride with you and coach you.
They will follow you, lead you and consult with you on what you need to do to
improve you riding.
BTW, more info on the Keith Code school, complete with all
tracks and dates is at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.superbikeschool.com" target="_blank">http://www.superbikeschool.com</a>
Regarding Keith Code's California Superbike Schools:
This school is organized so that each session gives you one riding technique to
work on. As the sessions go on, the skills build on each other and so do the
grins!
Each session of track riding is preceeded by classroom instruction of an exact
and specific riding technique. Then when you go out to the track you practice
that technique. The on track instructors will follow you and coach you on that
technique.
There are now 4 levels of drills. The only prerequisite is that you've done
the preceeding level to go up one level.
Now for the NEW part:
1. Free lap times - I think most schools don't do this and the past charge was
$25 for this service.
2. Between session drills! Ordinarily there's waiting time between track
sessions since the classroom part doesn't take that long. Now there will be
drills done off the track! For example, "Steering Technique Drills", "Smooth
Down Shifting Drills", "Smooth Braking Drills", and of course the "Lean-Slide
Machine" if you're doing level 2 or 4.
So now we even get off the track coaching on riding techniques!
AND SOMETHING THAT IS NOT AVAILIABLE ANYWHERE ELSE! AND I'M REALLY STOKED ON
THIS ONE:
Some of you are familiar with Keith's old brake rig. It was basically a mid
80's Kawasaki with a pair of rigid outriggers attatched to the frame with small
wheels attatched to the outermost ends of the out riggers. The outriggers
prevented you from falling left or right and allowed you to brake hard and fast
without falling.
The new machine is similar in that it does have outriggers with wheels, BUT
it's suspended on shocks so that it can tilt. This machine is not intended for
braking drills, but intended to be leaned over.
Yes, we can now test the limits of traction and lean the bike way over without
the fear of falling. In Level 2 this is used for you to experience greater
lean angles. In Level 4, this machine is used to slide.
Anyone want to test inside and outside peg weighting? Now we can!
The "Lean - Slide Machine" is availiable for Level 2 riders to test maximum
lean angles and for Level 4 riders to learn how to slide!
Level 1: Basic level
Level 2: Use of the Lean Machine
Level 3: Advanced drills
Level 4: The lean machine is used to learn how to slide. They also send you a
question-sheet in advance about your experience level and what you want to
learn or need work on. Then by school time, a customized
learning program has been put together especially for you as an individual.

**Special acknowledgement and thanks to Keith Code of California Superbike
Schools for his help and guidence and support. The Doc Wong Street Riding
Clinics are almost all based on his works.
My personal recommendation: Get his books and tapes on the subject, read them
and apply them....your riding will be much better for it!
And special acknowledgement to Gary Jaehne for his contributions on the
Suspension clinics and in his book: "Sportbiking: The Real World"....great
reading.
And special acknowledgement to L. Ron Hubbard who has provided me with the
vital tools to be effective in life and in teaching me how to learn
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Street riding, dual-sport riding, dirt riding, trials riding, side car riding,
now track riding....lots to do, not enough time...gota get to flat trackin
someday.
Recommendation if you ride street: Get a dual-sport bike or dirt bike and learn
how to ride in the dirt where it's always loose. Besides being a blast, it'll
make you a more confident street rider.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
