Never mind blushing: can you have a word with the powers that be to
the effect that a hand-scrawled note in coloured crayon, informing
passengers that the East London Line station at Shadwell will be
closed until mid two-thousand-and-TEN does not look *desperately*
professional, even if you do station (hah) some poor sod outside the
gates to turn away prospective passengers.
Thankyou. >> Stay informed about: LT Museum visit |

significant chunks of the network are fubared nearly every day of the
week. there's a whole page of metro just to keep you up to date with
exactly which chunks are fubared on any particular day.

They consider it a success when they're able to accurately state which
bits are borked on any particular day.
A bit like some systems I was working on at BA some years back, whose
measure of success was being able to inform passengers of their
luggage losses and expected arrival whil they were still at the
airport - efforts to stop or redcue baggage loss may, or may not, have
been going on, but it's a sad reflection on these things that the
whole systems and teams of people are dedicated to mitigating the
effects of poor service, rather than being able to concentrate on the
service itself.

This is Shadwell you are talking about?
>Thankyou.
There are announcements every 20 seconds that the East London is closed.
It was plastered all over the newspapers up to 22 December last year
that it was closing. The TfL website tells you it is closed. There are
stonking big "Rail Replacement Bus" signs on the side of double decks
circumnavigating Wapping and Shadwell north of the water and round
Rotherhithe and New Cross to the South.
I didn't think you made use of the tube anyway? I thought you were
strictly a two wheel person and then DLR only as an act of desperation?

I'll bite. You're wrong on this - completely and utterly wrong.

There is loads going on to improve the tube. In the meantime there is a
drive from our MD that we must keep our passengers informed as to what
is going on. By and large that strategy is working - simple things like
the line status boards are a very helpful addition to allow you to
travel with confidence.

So, they've spent so much money, there's none left for a half-decent
notice?

I don't, but I do ride down Cable St every morning, and I feel sorry
for the LUL droid stood outside the gates of a closed station. >> Stay informed about: LT Museum visit |

i want to travel with a difference kind of confidence, though - the
expectation that my public transport will actually arrive at the time it
says on the timetable, and be cheap - a lot cheaper than me using my own
transport, due to economy of scale. the "confidence" that i might be told
that there is a delay or a cancellation, and even what the reason for it
might be, is little consolation for the fact that i can't get to where i
want to go at the time i expected to be able to, and i've still been
charged more than it would have cost to do it all myself for the
privilege.

You moved back to the wrong country then.
Oddly enough, I very rarely use the tram/bus/rail system in
Switzerland. I very much like the fact that it exists, is reliable,
clean and cheap, and is used by much of the population as their
transpart of choice.
But for me, I just like to get there faster, which is nearly always
the case for driving vs. trains, usually significantly so, like 1.25
hours from Basel to Engelberg by road c/w 2.5 by rail. Plus we've got
so much in the habit of carting shedloads of (ski) gear with us all
the time that it's a right PITA getting on and off trains with it.
